Q:For some reason I‘m having a hard time finding a good DIY instruction page on how to remove floor tile. Half of them are about removing just one damaged tile and the rest all have different methods. Some say to place a towel on top of it and smash with something, others have different machines. I‘m not really sure where to start. The space is about 5‘ x 5‘ and the tiles are the tiny kind, like 1 sq. inch each. What tools do I need? Do people usually tile underneath wooden vanities? Will I have to take it up? Help!: I am assuming the tile is on a wooden sub-floor based on the under the vanity question. If so take a hammer to it. The tiles should come up fairly easily. the hard part is getting the thin set cement underneath to come up. Try a scrapper with a 4 razor blade to get that up. try wetting it first. If it turns out to take too long and you find it difficult to get the thin set up, consider renting a roto-chipping hammer to get it up. It's about $35 a day to rent. If this is an older home, the tile will be in a cement base up to 1 1/2 thick (with a wire mesh) and you'll want to get the rotohammer then. If the tile is on a concrete slab intead of wooden sub-floor get the rotohammer. Hope this helps

Q:I would like to redo my entire house in ceramic tile floors but money is tight. I‘m planning to do the entire thing with leftovers I can get from other people who have finished their own tile projects. Is it possible ot use wall tiles on the floor for small areas? Are wall tiles able to withstand the pressure of walking? Any advice?: It depends on the exact tile and where you are putting them. Some say wall tile on a show board ( for example) but can be used on floors also in certain areas of the house ( bath rooms 1/2 baths) If they do have a real shiny surface on them , they ll have a 0 rating , meaning walls only. Some other that say walls , that have a matte finish, can be used on the floor in baths. These have a 1-2 rating for slip resistance. Putting the tiles down properly is the biggest thing to be concerned with. Almost any tile put down properly wil not break. And if you can, leave site names.: It depends entirely upon the type and quality of tile (glazed porcelain will typically be less expensive than stone or travertine), or if you are installing real hard wood, or laminate, where you buy the tile/laminate/hardwood (an outlet, home depot, costco) and if you are doing it yourself, or hiring it done, which will of course automatically make it more expensive if you hire it done. Once you decide the look and feel you want for your room or house that may help you to decide further. I hope this helps!

Q:I have a rental that currently has sheet vinyl in the kitchen that is in bad shape. I am considering putting in self adhesive floor tiles over the vinyl. I have installed similar flooring in a bathroom but used inexpensive tiles. It looked good, but the tiles tended to slide. I‘m thinking it was because I used bargain tiles rather than better quality.I just need comments as to longevity and problems you might have encoutered with self adhesive tiles. Also, do you have any particular brand or type you recommend?: I have numerous rental properties that I use peel and stick tiles in with good success. I get them at Lowe's usually and I spend about a buck a tile. Never had any problems with them other than if the floor gets to wet for extended periods of time the tiles will pop up. best remedy for that is a small tub of vinyl tile adhesive and a small notched trowel, put a little glue on the back of the tile that pops and stick it back down. as far as longevity, I have floors that I have put down more than 5 years ago and they still look as good as the day they were done. Pay attention to how thick the tiles are. The thin, cheap tiles are just that, thin and cheap. The tiles I get from Lowe's I'm not sure who the manufacturer is but they are called Eurostone, they look like marble more or less. If the vinyl on your floor is in good shape and sticking good you can go right over that, if not you may have to put down luan on go over that.

Q:I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? In otherwords: in total, how much would I pay to have the entire apartment tiled in ceramic vs. vinyl? Please note I am not a DIY person AT ALL so approximate labor prices are crucial. Thanks!: vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape,you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day,whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........

Q:How can I find out how many tiles I need to buy?: It is sold by the s/f ,even if you buy a 8x8 tile for example. Some places will only sell in whole boxes.You ll need extra for cuts and waste anyway. When buying from the big box places ,look and make sure you get all the same dye lot and run number. Q:Has anyone ever used the spray glaze you can use to paint ceramic tile? I have some ugly green tile on the walls in my bathroom, and I don‘t want to get into busting it out. I saw it used on HGTV, but I want to know if any REAL people have used it? If so, was it expensive? Easy to use? Did it run? I will take any other ideas anyone has for an inexpensive way to do something with this horrible green!: It's called re-glazing. There are companies out there that re-glaze bathtubs and ceramic tile. A bathtub can cost about $700 to re-glaze. Home improvement centers have re-glazing kits but they are only as good as the applicator. What's more important than the re-glazing kit, is the preparation. The glaze on the green tile needs to be dulled by acid washing. If you go over the green tile with it's slick surface, the re-glazing will peel off...
