Level any imperfections (floor leveler) and , thoroughly, clean the area that you are laying tile in. This can be an inexpensive flooring solution but more expensive, higher quality tile, will give you years of use and abuse.

Q:I‘m getting some of my house tiled and would like to know if I am getting ripped off or not. It is going to be approximalte 600 sq ft with 2 upstairs bathrooms. The installer gave me a quote of $2400 to lay the tile (straight or diagonal, whichever I want). I will have to buy the tile and other materials on my own. The tile is going to be 18x18. The price includes ripping out the carpet and ripping out the tile that is already in the kitchen that will be replaced as well as the tile in the upstairs baths. Also included will be haul away of all the trash. Is this a good price or not?: I am a contractor and for the work you describe i would usually charge 10 dollars a square foot. But I would include all the material including the tile but not exceeding a certain price per foot. And diagonal is extra so I think you got a damn good deal. Be careful check the guy research now no tears later.

Q:Last year I had my bathroom remodeled. I had a new tub and tile installed. I asked the tile man to put the tiles together and not to have grout lines. He insisted that they HAD to have grout. I told him to put in the smallest, narrowest grout line as possible. Well now the tile grout is looking yucky. I know how to clean it so that is not the question. I just want to know why do you have to have grout in the first place? If the tiles are pushed up against each other with the sides touching and then put in grout in the very small area. why would a professional tile man insist that it MUST have grout?: Well, obviously the tile man was not aware that there are tiles now on the market that don't have to have grout... In fact, they now make tiles that have a flat edge and are glazed right to the edge. These tiles can be glued with a special glue and need no grout whatsoever as they touch one another. It makes for a very nice finish! I've recently done it in a kitchen with 13 x 13 pure white tiles on a backsplash..it looks great!

Q:We will be tiling a backsplash directly onto drywall after our countertops are installed. My question is -- what do I do about the electrical outlets in that area? The tile is about 1/4 inch thick -- and I want the outlets even with the tile (right?) After I tile around the outlet openings, then how do you make them flush when you put everything back together? For example, do I just pull the sockets out so that the screw brackets sit on top of the tile? If so, then do I need to drill screw holes through the tile? If so, then how do I make sure that the tile does not break or crack?: Normally, you have 1/4 of extra thread on the outlet screw to play with. If the screw isn't long enough ask someone at your local hardware store for a longer screw. DON'T use drywall screws because they will strip the threads on your electrical box. So yes, pull the sockets out and let the screw brackets sit on the tile.

Q:evora tile: Hard and almost impossible to say. Places like that will buy pallet loads of sometimes discontinued tiles , factory over runs and slower sellers. Some times its factory 2nds or ( builders grades) . Any brand name they might buy is often private labeled just for them . Sometimes looking at the tile I can tell or sometimes the box style can give it away . There are on occasion markings or initials on tile backing that will give away the tile manufacturer. Q:i built a new shower, and plan on tiling up to the ceiling. if i tile the ceiling itself, someone told me this would be a chore to clean. any experience in this? the ceiling is cement board right now, what are my other options? BTW, the tile is 4x4 travertine.: Tile the ceiling because the tile is easier to maintain than paint. The ceiling will not get as dirty as the rest of the shower. Do not ever use Windex on travertine, or any other natural stone. The ammonia will etch it, remove sealer and eventually ruin your grout. Never use acidic cleaners of any type on stone. Seal with a good penetrating sealer and clean only with cleaners made for stone. Be sure the shower gets good ventilation to prevent mold and mildew.
