- Q:I‘m redoing a sunroom in florida and the floor is in good condition but white textured vinyl floor tile prof laid, I want a cork tile look and wondered if there is a plastic type paint to do the job. It will not get a lot of shoe traffic. TKS.
- You can paint the floor tile with a 100% sucess. However, its going to be an epoxy 2 part floor paint. Here is how to do it. You will need to rent an orbital floor sander to clean and roughen up the surface with 400 grit paper. Then mix the two part epoxy and use an applicator. Im not certain how you'd achieve the cork tile look, but with some expermentation, im sure you could. The Epoxy floor is available in Chicago here at Menards this week for $38 and it covers 250 sq feet on new floor and 500 on 2nd application. The MAB paints also sells a similar material with much more color selections.
- Q:I‘m getting some of my house tiled and would like to know if I am getting ripped off or not. It is going to be approximalte 600 sq ft with 2 upstairs bathrooms. The installer gave me a quote of $2400 to lay the tile (straight or diagonal, whichever I want). I will have to buy the tile and other materials on my own. The tile is going to be 18x18. The price includes ripping out the carpet and ripping out the tile that is already in the kitchen that will be replaced as well as the tile in the upstairs baths. Also included will be haul away of all the trash. Is this a good price or not?
- A porcelain tile is decorative and glazed only on the outside. If you were to see a cross section, you would find only a small decorative veneer sorta surface on the exposed side. The rest of the tile has a dirt colour. In a ceramic tile, the colour is uniform throughout the tile. Practically, say if a prcelain tile gets chipped, you will see the dirt colour where it's chipped. In a ceramic one, it would not be such a stark difference. By the way, many mugs and cups we use for beverages, are made of ceramic. The not so personal stuff like vases could be made of porcelain. Got it ?

- With no offense to others who answer, nor to you, certainly WEB SITES may help,,, as well as one who answered concrete backer board. After installing thousands of sq. ft. of tile I have some thoughts. Not wondering at all about your design, which is totally up to each individual, you'll need to know the basics of hanging tile on a verticle surface. While realizing that a verticle surface defines Shear weight as it relates to tile, you'll certainly need spacers for grout lines, a decent rapid set mortar, etc. You don't state the size of the tiles? 4 inch? 6 inch? I also wonder what your counter surface is now, and the backsplash issue? The backer board offers a surface more likely to accept mortar in its texture, holding it better than drywall, and certainly offers more durability with regard to a kitchen,,,or bath, in its water resistance issues. Many small tile sections, IE: 1 inch/ 2 inch are usually mesh paper backed to help them stay in a predetermined place in spacing. The task is only different in that you're battling the natural laws of physics and gravity when you apply tile to a verticle surface. I offer this then leave you to ponder. NEVER extend yourself or any job, farther than can be managed without error, or having to lay a pile of bricks against a wall to hold up newly installed tile. Knowledge is usually something we acquire AFTER we NEED it, and Patience is truly a virtue in this case for a DIY. Steven Wolf (The Rev.)

- If you are talking about the bathroom tile around a shower you will need a lime remover it will clean the soap scum and water deposits. The floor tiles just need a general cleaner. If you want to clean tiles in a kitchen use a de greaser.

- Q:I want to know if it‘s necessary to use any special underlayment, or any additional steps required to successfully lay ceramic tile over a wood plank floor. Thanks!
- yes, you'll need a good underlayment. The reason is that the independent movement of the planks as weight loads the floor will cause torque between two planks, cracking the mortar and the grout and perhaps the tiles themselves. Its enough work to lay the tile that you definately don't want to do this without the underlayment. And I'm a guy that will lay tile over a well secured vinyl floor, so I'm not one of those there's only one right way to do it people. But in this case, you'll be unhappy with the results without a sanded plywood or cement board underlayment.
