Q: I am installing tile in a bathroom, hall, dinining room, and kitchen, and they all connect. Where should I center the tiles?: Without seeing the floor plan that is hard. Draw your floor plan out carefully and make a tile grid that matches your drawing scale. If the grid is on tracing or clear acetate sheet you can lay it over your drawing. You want to keep as many straight lines through doors as you can and keep the edges against walls balanced at the same time. You can cheat the layout a little bit by using wider or narower grout line if it is ceramic tile. The fewer places you have less than a half tile against a wall the better it will work. remember that you will have some furniture, so exposed edges after furnishing matter a bit more than edges you will never see behind a couch.

Q: My foyer and hallway is white tile with white grout. I am more vintage/traditional and was going to be using new grout. Are there any other colors besides white that will look good for the grout?: They missed a step....Use a good clear silicone caulking in the 'crack' where tile and grout meet wall. Then I would sand the tile down, next use KILZ premium primer it will stick to anything you put it on, Wait one hour then you can top coat it with a 100% Aacrylic paint such as KILZ Casual Colors from Wal-Mart. The reason I say use a 100% aacrylic paint is due to the fact that it make your paint more washable and scrub-able it will also last longer, i.e no color change or mildew.

If the soap and water do not work try mineral spirits, (also known as paint thinner and/or turpentine) on a small area of the tiles. You can try the fingernail scraping method first and some of the paint may come off straight away if it is latex and not too thick. If you get all the paint off you can shine them with carnuba wax, but try the wax on a hidden tile to make sure it does not have a reaction with bakelite. Best of luck.
