Q:We are using some leftover floor tile (6x6 size) and some new decorative tile (2x2 and 1x1) to tile our backsplash. Can we use the same mortar that we used on the floor? Also, we used a 1/4 inch notched trowel when doing the floor -- should we use a smaller notch for the backsplash (say, a 1/8 inch notched trowel)? Finally, the floor tile and the 1x1 tiles are porcelain. The 2x2 tile is tumbled travertine with quite a few pits on the surface. We don‘t know if we should fill those pits with grout or not. On one hand -- it will make the tiles easier to clean if they are filled (yes?). On the other, we like the look of the pits and don‘t know if we want the grout (which is a slightly darker color) filling the pits. Any suggestions?
If you are not tiling a lot later don't buy another trowel. The porcelain thin set should be fine for back-splash, because it is stronger than the regular one. The pits are the beautiful parts of the tile, don't fill grout on it, otherwise it looks like you pick them from trash. You should use tile sealer to seal the surface of the tile, not the bottom, it would easy to clean out the thin set or grout and avoid it absorb water.
Q:I have a small round accent table with formica top. I‘d like to try my hand at mosaic tiling on the top. Is it possible to do this over the formica, or do I have to remove it. If so, what do I use to prep the formica before tiling. p.s. I‘ve never tiled anything before. Using this as a learning project. Thanks for any suggestions, tips.
Do NOT try to sand or grind off the formica top!! That is a terrible idea!! Instead go to the lumber yard or home center and get thinner for formica cement, or any brand of contact cement thinner, or, barring that, try your hand with acetone. Try to start the top separating by prying at an edge or even breaking off a chip, use a brush and flood the crack or edge with the thinner and the formica laminate will come loose so easily you'll probably be surprised. The glue bond is never that good with formica, what makes it stick so well is simply the fact that it is such a large gluing surface area in a typical formica application. Work with a cheapie, throw-away brush and a putty knife. Use the putty knife to lift the formica and keep flooding the area near the putty knife with contact cement thinner via the brush. The formica laminate will come off very easily. If you don't feel like dealing with removing the formica, don't try to stick tile to it. Instead, try applying some 1/8 thick fibreboard, using the same formica contact cement and a lot of fasteners. Then, do your tiling with the firbreboard as your substrate. But, removing the formica laminate is actually very easy. The thinner gives off nasty fumes, do it outside or in a very well ventilated area. Once the formica is off, keep rubbing down the wood substrate with the thinner to get rid of as much of the gunky contact cement residue as you can. You can brush on the thinner, then scrape the softened glue off with a paint scraper and finish the wood off rubbing it with a cloth dampened with the thinner. This should not take long. Then, hit it with a coarse sanding to prepare it for tiling. This is the perfect project to try your hand at working with tile.
Q:I‘m thinking about most economical way to up grade my living and master bedroom flooring.both had laminate and had flood slab leak due to underground water pipe damage. now the pluming has fixed and everything has been taken care of. the rest of the house already got white tiles throughout. I can go laminate in the living room and tile in the bedroom. both rooms are about 280 sq.ft. or I can do the need room laminate again. I don‘t know how to put the flooring, so I would Gabe to hire someone to do it. we have a Lowes home center where their contractor can come out and to the installation. they want $35 for an estimate. we also have a floor center just down the street from us. their material was little more expensive than the Lowes price but perhaps the installation may be cheaper... I‘m not sure. would tile thought the house including the bedroom better, cheaper than laminate in the bedroom? I know I would want laminate in the living room hopefully nothing gets wet.
On average , and it can vary, labor for tile ( ceramic) is almost double that of laminate.. Plus tile you have the extras for thin set and grout. Not much but it all adds up. On the plus side. tile, and I assume you mean ceramic tile will out last laminate. Get prices both ways or have them break down each room individually. And personally I d NEVER EVER pay to have an estimate done. Reputable companies don t charge for this service. I never ever charged for an estimate. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. Q:what causes lippage on a granite floor? i had someone install granite tiles in my bedroom and the lippage isn‘t too bad i must say but 2 or 3 tiles do have A LOT of lippage...was wondering why that would be? thanks so much in advance!
Hey BigBadShawn, I worked for years in flooring at The Home Depot and I got to see this question come up quite a bit from my customers. Natural stone tiles like granite can be tricky to keep, and lippage can come from various sources. Depending on what is underneath it as well as how the tiles are installed will determine what is the exact cause of the lippage. Usually I've seen with older houses with wood subfloors that prep work wasn't addressed so that over time as the floor joists/subfloor expands, contracts, and settles tiles of any substrate can pop up or create small lippages. The professional way to installed your floor was (hopefully) by the builder using a tile backerboard and/or securing the subfloor securely before laying down the tiles. Also, if the tiles have very thin to no grout lines, it is possible that the events of the floor joists settling makes little room for the tiles to go anywhere but up. With a high-quality flexible mortar, that shouldn't of been an issue. If you noticed a progression over time with your tiles, I'd say you most likely have a wood subfloor on your hands. If it was concrete, it could be a matter of improper installation, moisture, or unevenness of the surface itself that gave it the lippage you see now. Hope this helps you out, aboveaveragejoe
Q:How to buy tiles? What kind of good?
3. Touching the tiles sound crisp, bad voice boring 4. fight four pieces of brick together, the same size, side seam small and straight as well. Warping serious will affect the solid tiles. 5. Try to drop colored water droplets (such as tea, ink) on the front of the tile, put it down for a minute and then wipe it with a damp cloth. If there is a trace on the brick, it means that dirt is sucked into the brick. , Then the tile does not smoke, easy to clean brick quality. For more graphic experience, see ToGo experience
Q:can I surface over my white tile flooring granet??
if you are talking about stick on vinyl tiles then yes. Ceramic tiles, no, unless you put something on it to level out all the grout seams. Seems to me it would be easier to get the tile up and start at the bottom. It might also cause your floor level to be higher than in adjoining rooms, never a good look.
Q:it is literally burning hot have no idaea wat the problem is plzz help:). porcelain tile btw
you proll have in floor heating. its pipes running throo your floor with hot water.
Q:Just started tiling my tub surround and I have two very similar layouts graphed up. The actual colors of the tile and listello will be different than the ones shown in the pictures, so don‘t look at the computerized colors since they aren‘t accurate. The layout however, is pretty darn close to what I am planning on doing.
If it have been my kitchen, i might circulate with a million'x1' easy impartial tile on the floor, lighter impartial colour on the partitions and are available across a different back splash. you're able to additionally come across a kitchen rug to verify the back splash to furnish it some continuity. i might additionally possibly circulate impartial colour with the counter tops. i might use impartial colorations basically with the aid of fact the brown interior the cabinets is amazingly solid. or... you circulate paint the cabinets white that may not basically brighten the kitchen altogether, yet in addition supply you a sparkling slate to apply regardless of colour on the partitions or counter tops. If I have been going this course then white cabinets, blueish-gray granite counter tops that incorporates backsplash, a million'x1' easy impartial tile with a rug matching the counter tops. Then knock it out with an extremely solid colour on the wall which includes a purple. The partitions are the least of your concerns considering you are able to continually repaint. desire this permits!
Q:Qingdao where there are Bode tiles monopoly
Qingdao Bode Tile Monopoly in Qingdao Laoshan District Liaoyang West Road Gaoke Park Decoration City Hall 1 A10-A14
Q:pattern is made up of black and white tiles. it is 7 tiles across .In the City Hall there is a pattern like this which is 149 tiles across. How many tiles all together? Please show work and how you got it.
Consider the tiles in the pattern above, but not including the 149 tile row. That row contains 147 tiles. The next higher row contains 145 tiles and the number decreases by 2 for each successive row. The number of tiles above the 149 tile row is the sum of the odd integers from 1 to 147. N = 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + ... + 145 + 147 N = Σ(2n-1) for n = 1 to 74 = 2Σn - Σ1 = 2(n)(n+1)/2 - n = 2(74)(75/2) - 74 = 74*75 - 74 = 74? tiles The pattern is symmetric about the 149 tile row so there are the same number of tiles below that row as there are above it. Including the 149 tile row the total number of tiles is: T = 2N + 149 = 2(74?) + 149 = 11101
