Q: What should you pay attention to when installing tiles?
Empty drums, shedding flatness after 3 days to see just finished shop looks like can not see
Q: I got these tiles at a yard sale. They appear to be very old, hand painted and likely of Mexican origin. The label is tattered and faded, but I would love to know more about them. Thanks for any info in advance.
Very nice and I am sure that once you put them up you will love the vintage old world look that they will give your room. Have fun!
Q: We are going to replace the bathtub that came with our house, built in 1986, but we can not decide whether or not to just get a regular bath combination shower or just the bathtub and tile the shower walls...any suggestions or experience with this that anyone would be able to recommend either way?
What type of flooring is in the room? Do you have another shower? I really like look of tile, but not cleaning it. I would recommend using a medium/dark grout.
Q: the tile squares have come off and I need to re-stick them. Which glue should I use?
The thin floor tiles? Sometimes you can heat the tile back and floor with a hair drier then stick them back in place one by one. If that doesn't work then carry a tile to a flooring outlet and ask them what to use and do. There's different types of adhesives. Some can be re-activated with heat while others need to be removed then a fresh application trowled on.
Q: Please help! and give as much information you can about the invention of tiles!
Tiles have been used by man as a paving or cladding material for thousands of years. There are examples of glazed tiles, such as the Ishtar Gate at Babylon, which survive from the 6th century B.C. But who invented tiles, is a little difficult to pin down. Archaeologists have found bits of tiles along the River Nile dating back between 12,000 and 18,000 years. As early as 5,000 B.C. the Egyptians were making brightly coloured tiles to decorate the interior of their pyramids. Tiles used by Arab and Moorish civilisations can still be seen today.
Q: I have a pistol grip glass cutter with a carbide cutting wheel....can this be used to cut ceramic tile, or am I better off to get tile nippers?
tile cutters work by scoring the tile then breaking along the score line so you can use the glass cutter and a pencil to break the tile by placing the score line over the pencil and applying pressure along both sides
Q: I wanted to remove three lines of bathroom wall tiles without distrubing other surrounding tiles. These tiles were fixed on cement around 5 months back.. now we can see cracks on these tiles (different color)..
hammer bust that tile in the middle of it. Remove pieces. Don't remove tile from edges or may damage neighboring tile.
Q: I wanted to put ceramic tile over the linoleum (in good shape) in our bathroom (floor is concrete). Can I do this or do I need to remove all the linoleum? Thanks
the difficulty with laying tile down is that if the floor is uneven in any respect (i.e., not completely flat) your helpful new costly ceramic tiles will harm! terrific to locate a place the place you are able to look below the linoleum and notice what's below it...yet, all that reported, that's why the pro will flow all the way all the way down to the sub-floor, get each little thing helpful and point, then placed down a million/2 cementitious backer-board (a million/4 for partitions, a million/2 for flooring) and then lay the tile. That way, that's worked out in improve despite the fact that if/if there will be a height difference between the recent tile floor and any flooring in rooms adjacent it...in any different case, that's oops, I tripped lower back. Spend the time, attempt and funds and do it precise.
Q: We want to pull out our carpeting and use self stick linoleum tiles. What do we need to know?
You want a clean, flat surface to place your tile on. You can buy leveler at your local hardware store or you could overlay your floor with luon which is a very thin plywood to help level your floor and have a clean surface to work with. You want to start at the center and square out your floor with chalk line. You want your cut pieces on the edges. My husband also used an adhesive to ensure the tiles stayed put, but ask to see if this is necessary. My floor has been in for about 10 years now and the edges are still tight.
Q: What are the pros and cons for using porcelain tiles or ceramic tiles?
They are both basically the same, my husband remodels and he has used both on many locations. It is all about your taste and finding something you like and can live with for a long time. As long as you seal it (as often as recomended) any tile will last a long time unless chipped or cracked. You'll probably get tired of it before you actually need to change it. They say porcelain is better for damp areas but we have used both in bathrooms with no problems so far. It's the grout that must be sealed and it's not that costly Lowe's and Home Depot can tell you the best sealant to use and you could do it yourself at a considerable cheaper price.
