- Kat and Kevin, It is not absolutely critical to put down material over the plywood before tiling. It's just better to do so. Nowadays, most people use backer board on top of the plywood. This is because backer board doesn't shrink or swell due to changes in moisture content. However, I've seen and done tiling directly over plywood in the past. This is done when customers are on a strict budget. In most homes built with plywood sub floors, tar paper is usually used between the two layers of plywood sub flooring. This acts as a moisture barrier and prevents the bottom layer and floor joists from being exposed to moisture. (I have seen tiling work done directly over plywood and it has lasted, without cracks in the gout, for 20 years). Having said that, it's best to lay down something like backer board. Increasing the height of your floor can be a problem with any addition to the plywood sub floor. Sometimes doors or other items can be affected by the increased height. You can also use different thicknesses of backer board to prevent too much height, while still using the board.

- it will last about a 9 months and you will start to have problems. If this is your home remove the tile if you are renting float away. Problems you will see: floor warps, moisture underneath starts to turn the edges on the wood floor black, your floor will creak, bubbles in floor as well.
- Q: I need tile removed from my shower
- Start with a key hole saw, and saw all around the out side of the tile, cutting through the dry wall.After all the plumbing covers are removed, you can then start to use a pry bar and work the tile loose from the studs. This will work for tile over dry wall, over a backer board or even a mud job.. Cover the tub well, wear a dust mask and cover all areas for dust protection. Open a window if possible and set a fan there blowing dust out. Use hammer as little as possible to prevent razor sharp chips from flying and wear all safety gear, including long sleeve shirts, eye and ear protection. And most of all have the elbow grease ready. - I'm not at all familiar with tile making using rice hulls, but certainly I'm curious. I've installed multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile; as well as having sculpted clay to fire in my kiln. You don't state that the glass will be in chip form, or has to be fired/melted. I profess some ignorance but it seems that in some way, the process would require a Forge or kiln, and when and how would the rice hull be infused,,,and more importantly how might one expect Rice Hull to stand up to the same temps as it would take to liquify glass? - Q: The tile of my garage is 10 years old. The house was abandoned and I bought it. The tile that was used was a textured ceramic tile. I‘ve tried brushing it and washing it with different products but it goes back to a dusty look. Any ideas on how to bring it back to life other than paying to get it polished by a professional. - If you don't want to pay for the labor to have it cleaned, you will be the one to do it yourself. Elbo Grease. Get some Tile Acid Cleaner from the Home dpot/Lowes, and a couple of hand held scrub brushes, some plastic bristles, some metal bristles, (to see which works best). Get a spray bottle, poor the acid into it. do not delut with water. Not until after it has sat on it for 5 min and you have scrubbed and scrubbed. Then spray with water (lightly Misting) and wipe up with disposable towels. Dont forget the rubber gloves. After the entire floor is finished or until you are satisfied (or if you want to do in Stages) wait until entirely dry and get some Tile Sealer and begin to apply. Pay attention to the grout lines first then mop all over the tile. The cost for materials will be about $50--$70 But the labor is where the real money is. Have Fun I do not envy you.
- Q: Can you put ceramic tile over the commercial grade hard plastic vinyl tile? It would be really hard to break up off the floor. It is stuck on there really good.
- Yes, as long as the sub floor of the VCT is thick enough. Is it over wood or concrete? If it is over concrete, then all you have to do is score the VCT with a razor knife, and apply regular thin-set. I would recommend the one with additive, but it is not necessary. It will say on the bag which sub floors are acceptable. If it is over wood, the wood needs to be at least 3/4 of an inch thick outdoor grade plywood. The best option would be to place cement board over the VCT before setting the tile. This may make your floor height much higher than desired, however. Again, you can go right over it, but you need to score the VCT. In either case, you have to make sure there are no loose vinyl tiles. If there are, you must remove them, or else the ceramic tile might crack.
- Q: I want to install a towel hook in my bathroom, but it is all ceramic tile, including the walls. Adhesive doesn‘t work. Is there any way to put screws in the tile with out cracking the tiles? Thanks.
- They make drill bits specifically for tile. They have a sharper point than the normal masonry bits. You can drill through the tile and then into the wall. Make sure that the anchor is in the drywall and not just the tile, any weight on the tile itself will eventually pull it off the wall. Small toggle bolts work, but they require a larger hole to be drilled. Make sure you do not tighten whatever you use too much and crack the tile. The very best thing you could do would be to put screws into a stud behind the drywall, but finding one can be extremely difficult under tile. You don't want to use a hammer drill like you would in drilling into concrete or mortar, the percussion would break the tile, a regular drill will work fine.

- Im sorry Ever Wolf, i'm sure you're a good contractor, but you're no tile installer. Non-sanded grout is for grout joints 1/8 or smaller. sanded grout is for grout joints 1/8 or larger. The sand is for stability in larger grout joints. NEVER use sanded grout in anything smaller than 1/8 When installing marble tile, it is customary to butt the tiles against each other with no grout joint at all. The edges of the tiles are machined with a micro-bevel so there will be a slight groove between them that are to be filled with an unsanded grout. Use latex fortefied WHITE thinset mortar. Marble can be a bit translucent and the darker grey thinset can show through. There is alot more to consider such as what to do with the edges, but that is too involved to try to explain here. good luck with your project!
