- Q:My grandpa‘s bathroom needs to have a few adjustments made to it, namely safety bars put in place around the tub to help him in and out. The problem: every wall is covered in glazed tile (which I know makes a difference) and the bars need to be screwed in.My question is this: how? - There are clay, concrete and wood/cement fiber roof tiles, but I am not familiar with ceramic unless you are referring to the ceramic granules that are used to surface some brands of metal tiles. Metal tiles are durable, cost efficient and light weight. The ones with the ceramic granules will reflect more heat than the crushed stone ones, but the ceramic colors will fade more than the natural stone. Clay tiles are light weight and will last a lifetime, unless broken from impact, but you will pay dearly for the real clay. Clay is the color of the natural soil that is is made from so the color doesn't fade. Concrete is very heavy and is usually painted, so the finish eventually weathers off and you see the typical gray concrete color coming through. Since the concrete is so heavy, most structures require added support to firm up the roof deck. There are lighter weight concrete tiles available, but these are made with wood fiber filler and break very easily. Most structures will need framing support added for these also. For the best price, metal tile is a very good choice and most will have a manufacturers warranty for 50 years
- Q:I‘m installing new tile in my bathroom and had a few questions.1. I understand that I‘m supposed to remove the toilet prior to laying the tile. So I remove the toilet, lay new tile, and then put the toilet on top of the tile? Does this mean that the toilet will sit on the tile? If so, won‘t there be a very little gap where the tile and toilet meet? Are you supposed to seal this gap? Or, do you cut the tile around the shape of the bottom of the toilet and tile around it?2. Same question with the vanity. I‘m replacing my old vanity. Do I have to remove the old vanity, lay tile in the whole area where the old vanity was, and then install the new vanity on top of the tile? Again, what about the small gap? Does it need to be sealed? What do you seal it with?3. How do you remove the old vanity? Do you simply disconnect the plumbing, remove the screws holding it to the wall, and pry it from the wall?Any comments, suggestions, or advice are appreciated.
- I should point out, that it is not recommended to caulk around the base of the toilet. this is because, if the wax seal were ever to start leaking, the caulk would contain it under the toilet and you would never know it was leaking until the floor rotted and you and the toilet fall through into the living room. No body wants to see that!!
- Q:The tiles were installed about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and we decided that we just cant live with the really wide grout lines that ended up gradually becoming huge. So we‘ll have to remove about half of the tile. Is it possible to remove and reuse these tiles? If so, what about the left-over thin set? Will it be stuck on the tiles? And what about the cement board under them? Is it reusable or easier to just replace? Thanks for any answers!
- This is going to be messy. Usually the tiles will break when removing them, if they were properly installed in the first place. Some tile may not break but the mastic will stick to either the tile or backer board. The mastic must be scraped off. Over all it would be simpler to just demo the old tile and start over.

- Could be the humidity. What did he use to stick them down? Did he use a mastic that comes already mixed in a tub? If so, there will probably always be problems in a humid or wet areas. Thinset is best for tile.

- I like ceramic tile. Yes, it will be cold on your feet in the winter, I just use bathroom rugs and have no problem with this. I prefer ceramic, especially for the bathroom, because that is going to be the wettest room of the house...and even more so if you have kids! Make sure you get textured tiles...we didn't know to do that for the bathroom and needless to say there have been lots of slips and falls when our kids start running through the house with wet feet. I have cleaned many many ceramic floors and many many vinyl floors....not much difference in how well they clean up. Tile has grout, but it won't show dirt depending on the color you choose.

- I know you had enough schooling to use a calculator. if not a pencil and division.. Size of tiles matter. They do not sell half a tile so you got to go with a whole one and then cut it to size. So lay some tiles out dry on the floor with the proper grout spacing and count them up when you get a foot worth.(or two feet on a flat floor) as maybe by the time you get to 13 or 11 it is only one tile extra you got to figure with.. Basically the tiles go to a wall and if there is extra that is cut off and put on the next wall(like the tiles were bent) so it looks continuous.. Or just use your calculator and multiply 13 and 11(this sounds like you are only doing the floor?) and add 10% more tiles as a just in case thing and you will get the same batch color of all the tiles. Chances are you can return the unused ones for a full refund. Ask the sales people about that while you are buying them.
