- Q: I cannot see that a electrode would be useful in a generator, is there a way?
- According to Wikipedia: An electrode is an electrical conductor used to make contact with a nonmetallic part of a circuit (e.g. a semiconductor, an electrolyte or a vacuum). There is an example of an electrode used in generators, and all industrial/commercial electrical systems. It is called a grounding electrode. It is a metallic rod that is driven deep in to the dirt, to establish a contact with the background Earth voltage. Is the dirt a nonmetallic part of the circuit? Well, dirt often does contain metals in it, but it isn't dominantly metal, so it still is considered non-metallic. And we normally hope that the dirt isn't part of the circuit, but there is a chance that it can become part of the circuit, and that is generally why grounding electrodes are installed. The grounding electrode doesn't really play an active role in the operation of any of the electrical equipment. It is more of a safety feature, as a JUST IN CASE the insulation on the live wire fails. Suppose the live wire insulation fails, and the live wire contacts the metal structure of a device (that isn't intended to play an electrical role), and you as a human victim touch that metal structure. You are also standing on the ground, and the natural path of electric current from the metal structure to the ground is through your body. Unless of course, a better path is established in advance. And that is what a grounding electrode, and the rest of the grounding system does. It establishes electrical continuity with all metals that aren't intended to be electrically involved, so that any failure of the live wire will trip the circuit breaker before there is a chance that the human gets injured.
- Q: For eg in electricity board energy bills?
- We refer to it as Demand Factor. Its the total calculations of all lighting, dedicated appliance, general use power in the unit of Current (Amps). We have a NEC formula to calculate what is required when build a dwelling or commercial build. usally done by engineers on the E-sheet of blue prints, but any lic. electrical contractor, journeyman, etc. can make those calculations. I am not going to write a 10 page explanation of Demand Factor calculations. Its not one easy formula. You have to add percentage value for light loads, general use is 180 watts per outlet. Continus duty circuits need to be cal. at 125% demandetc. See there is alot more, When I was an apprenntice I did not learn this stuff until fourth year. EDIT: Well isn't that a *****! Thats why i never heard of that term. UK refers to metered service as maximum demand? USA its called Kilowatt hour usage
- Q: I opened up my mouse, and im currently using it without the top, because the left click on the mouse is only working about 1 in every 50 or so clicks with the shell on it.Is there a way I can make the click work again with the shell on or do I simply have to buy a new mouse?
- Hi The 'click' is a microswitch tripping. Sometimes the plastic wears down just enough so the switch won't trip. Put a small piece of electrical tape on the back side of the mouse button and try it. Good luck!
- Q: If one of the two metal things on a electrical cord is larger than the other, but the holes in the outlet are the same size so it won't fit, is it okay to force it in?
- If the holes in he receptacle are the same size, there are two possible reasons. 1. This is a very old receptacle, which I doubt. 2. This is a receptacle polarized for another voltage. The different configurations of the receptacles and plugs are by design, to keep people from connecting electrical devices to the wrong voltage supply. There is equipment with plugs having the same receptacle blade width, but this equipment is double insulated and code does not require the plugs for this equipment to be polarized. TexMav.
- Q: Conduct regular maintenance tests for the electrical equipment. The following actions should be taken to reduce the probability of potential electrical deficiencies at this facility. The Hazard
- potential electrical deficiencies means the possibility that this facility will not work due to electrical problems in other words, future problems caused by lack of maintenance on the electrical equipment. Therefore, the sentence could be rephrased as follows: The following actions should be taken to to make sure all the electrical equipment stays in good working order.
- Q: I m trying to repair some vintage audio equipment, and I notice these tissue like strips that hold the cables together, without being rolled on. What are those properly called, and do they come in rolls?
- Old-style electrical tape was impregnated cloth and not plastic as it is now. There is some still around, it comes in rolls.
- Q: Do you find batteries die faster than they should, light bulbs flicker or go out too quickly, electrical equipment does werid stuff or dies sooner than it should. I've had some weird experiences with the computer and one small printer ar work. Also, I had a period where remote controled TV's would go on by themselves. I don't have that problem now, though.
- YES. There are times when everything that runs on batteries will drain when I try to use them. Light bulbs too. It doesn't happen all the time and I haven't figured out any rhyme or reason (if there is one) for when it happens. I do have a couple of theories though. One is that the entities are around and trying to let me know they are there or at times I become a beacon of sorts, and attract them. I also have had clocks with dead batteries start running again. Also rings, clicking sounds at the same time of day for awhile on a land line phone, and then it will stop. Had a TV that would come on by itself. I have witch friend that in every vehicle she as ever owned always have electrical problems, we call them her gremlins since its been happening for over 20 yrs: and she is real tired of it.
- Q: Do they actually build stuff or just wire them? I know this is probably a stupid question.
- It certainly does not. There is a big difference between an electrical engineer and an electrician. An electrical engineer may well have a 4 year degree course to complete. Such a course will have a high Mathematical content. Electricians do not follow such a rigorous course and will be more hands on. Not a stupid question !
- Q: How long did it take you to complete? What job do you have now? I am interested in going to school for that and wondering what type of jobs I might have.
- It took me 4 years to complete I am in a leadership development programing at a large aerospace company A lot of my classmates got jobs in the defense industry. Most are working in computer enigneering, rf design, or software
- Q: Basically a reptile shop is selling some dangerous equipmet which I have brought. These include a un-ballasted fluorecent bulb unit (some home made unit using a plug a terminal and 2 end caps) (the vivarium looks burnt) (I wonder why :P) and they sold us a second hand starter unit (ballasted) which stank of smoke and had a 13 amp fuse however should have had a max 3 amp fuse. They are very un-knowledgeable about reptiles and the fuse to the starter unit looked burnt on the ends. I'm just worked about the safety of others who buy their equipment from there as I know for a fact most of it's dangerous. They sold me a 30w starter unit for a 15w bulb which I brought from them at the same time, any ideas who to contact about this unsafe store (I'm in the uk) thanks. :)
- Trading standards, local council. Local newspaper maybe if you are really unhappy about it they will for sure close the place down
