- Find the right sized bed first of all...too big and he has plenty of room for chewing on it and too small and he will be too uncomfortable to use it. After you find that send the bed and a couple of dryer sheets through the dryer for a few minutes-the sheet won't transfer any of the actual chemical onto the bed but it will leave the scent and he shouldn't want to chew the bed. Another thing you can try is to spray the bed with a mixture of eucalyptus oil and water--2-3 drops oil to 2 cups water-it will have just enough smell and slight taste that he won't want to chew it (that worked wonders for my Great Dane and her mattress).

- I know of young children like your son who have had regular sized beds with rails on the sides of them. As long as you have the rails you have nothing to worry about. A twin bed will work just as fine. P.S. I think toddler beds are just another thing to waste your money on seeing that twin beds work fine as well!

- I sleep on both and have had a broken back. so far no problems its more about how they feel the bed i have now was left by my ex-girlfriend its a brick so i had foam put over my side to make it more comfortible to me. I also dont like having my back open so i have body pillows that i can lean against and as for my head i have an extra firm bottom pillow and a normal one on top of that-- reminds me of the perfect couch arm-- mine is part mental and part physical and i learned how to make the bed more comfortible to me and kept the other half off my back pun intended good luck
