- Although I have never had hamsters, I have had guinea pigs and ran into a problem of another sort with pine bedding with my first guinea pig. Somehow my guinea pig managed to get a piece of pine bedding stuck in his rear end. He could not get it out and began biting himself. While this was going on, I walked by his cage and noticed he was bleeding from his rear. I took him to the vet who was able to remove the piece and then give him antibiotics. The vet told me that the best kind of bedding is a softer type of bedding called Carefresh. According to Carefresh's manufacturers, this bedding is all-natural and does not contain chemical contaminants. So this is another reason why I use Carefresh bedding, although this does answer your question. Carefresh is a safer alternative as a bedding for your pets.

Those are up to your personal choice as well. Extra pillows can help as well. As to whether or not you lay on top of your comforter, again it is up to you.

- Aspen shavings are the best. Do NOT but pine or cedar bedding because they are known to cause breathing problems in hamsters. Do NOT buy those cotton fluffy things because they are stringy and can cause injury. Also, shred some clean, unscented, plain tissue paper and put it in your hamsters cage. They like to chew on it and gather it around their sleeping area. I usually stuff some tissue in my bra first so that my scent is on it so that when I put it in their cage they can get accustomed to my scent.

- I have had those pests in my house. They leave black marks on the edges of the mattresses. If you see a bug on your bed, squeeze it and if blood comes out it's a bed bug. Those black things you see are probably their feces. Bed bugs don't live only in your bed. They can be on clothes, their eggs, you name it. I suggest you wash all your clothes (Heat kills them). By a bed bug spray, spray it on your bed, and cover your bed up with a mattress cover.

- Q: Hey everyone. My daughter turned 2 in September, and she's been having some sleeping issues. She has always slept in her own crib, but lately she doesn't want to sleep in it. She would rather sleep on our couch! LOL It makes me think she is ready for a change. So my husband and I were thinking about getting her a Disney Princess Toddler Bed for Christmas. I showed it to her, and she loved it. I think this will be the best decision for her since she is so petite, and I really don't think she is quite ready for a twin bed. Also, where we are currently living, her room is kinda on the small side. But I have a lot of people telling me it's pointless to buy a toddler bed since in a few years she will need a twin. I think it's best to get her a smaller bed for now and try to get her back to sleeping good in her room and then later on get a twin bed. What do you think? Thanks is advance for all of your help!! - While cost wise it is more efficient, a toddler bed is a great choice. It is still the size of a crib and ives her the feeling of security. We tried putting our son right into a twin, and because it was so big, it caused him stress. Sometimes kids like the feeling of smaller areas. Even at 2 anything that can slightly remind them of the womb is comforting. It's all subconscious. The bigger open space can sometimes be not so comforting. It depends really on the child. My daughter is the same way as my son and we just turned her crib into a toddler bed, whereas my friends daughter went right to a twin with no problems. This is what our OT for our son told us.

Some chins will actually ingest the bedding, and since CareFresh is made to expand when wet, it can cause a fatal blockage in the intestinal tract. CareFresh is the most expensive bedding on the market, but not necessarily the best choice for safety. She's the one who totally scared me away from it and I will NEVER use it or anything like it EVER for any species of pet. I just LOVE that website and the forum I gave you. Trust me, the 5 minutes is worth it.
