Before thrash there was already the new wave of British heavy metal, and black metal was influenced by a band like venom as well, for example, so I don't agree that thrash put metal on the map. Try to find a band you've never heard of, is faster than slayer, never compromised their style, has the harshest vocals you can imagine, has been together for at least 20 years, and only available on cassette tapes; then you're getting close to finding the truest metal!
