- well you could do what my grandfather used to do to test his metal detector..... get someone to place a coin ring and teaspoon under a rug and than you try to find it with the metal detector... that will make you familiar with the signals.. but beware if you plan on going to the beach to look for coins take gloves and a hand shovel, as idiots drop needles on beaches and metal detectors will pick up the metal in needles, especialy if your metal detector is a good one Happy Hunting
