Q:Do they resist stains, scratches/nicks and does it protect it from fading and making it easier to clean?The tiles will be going in my kitchen and pantry.Are unglazed tiles, ideal for high-traffic areas?: for a kitchen, a glazed tile might be too slick, so be careful what type of glazed surface you choose. steer clear of any tile that has a mirror finish. if you can see your face in the glaze at a certain angle, its not suitable for a kitchen! when it gets wet it will be too slippery. a glazed tile can be easier to clean than an unglazed tile. depending on the type of glazed tile, scratches can be a problem. unglazed tiles can have a rougher surface, which helps in the slip factor, but might be tougher to clean. go to your local tile distributor and look around. ask the sales rep; tell them where the tiles are going to be installed. they can give you some good ideas. consider a porcelain tile. they can be smooth as well as textured, generally are easy to clean, and VERY durable for high traffic areas. i've never seen any type of tile fade, so i can't help you out there. most tiles won't suck in staining liquids, like grape juice, etc, so unless you chose a marble or natural stone, i wouldn't worry about that. good luck!

Q:want to tile counter top with out using hardboard: It can and will hold up on one condition w/o a backer board.The top must be 2 3/4 ply wood or nova ply( HDF) , not the single layer counter top with the false edge that makes it look like its 1 1/2 thick. Other wise you need a backer board so the tile meets tile codes( ATC and TCA guide lines) for a minimum substrate which is 1 1/4 A few special thing need to be done but it will work. Q:I just grouted the ceramic tiles I laid in my kitchen. The grout was supposed to be a dark maroon color, but it turned out a whitish powdery color (efflorescence). What is the main cause of this...it can't be water coming from underneath the tiles because the basement is underneath the kitchen floor...unless it came from the mortar under the kitchen tiles. How do I get rid of the efflorescence. Grout cleaner didn't work...should I use salfamic (spelling?) acid and scrub the grout lines? Can J just refloat new grout over the existing grout? HELP...I need to put my base cabinets in, but I can't stand looking at my floor the way it is.: You have a larger problem than you think, that is if your basement floor is of solid construction. If so you have damp in the floor, and sorry to be the barer of bad news but it wont go away. You need a d.p.m. in sub floor prior to tiles is the only way. Jeff

I personally wouldn't put tile in my kitchen as I cook a lot and it is hard on the back and legs but I love it for my bathrooms. I personally have hardwood and you do need to take care of it but I love it. It is 13 years old and the only place it is showing wear is by the sink where I should have had an area rug.It has had a lot of traffic 2 kids and friends, 2 dogs and 2 cats. You need to wipe up spills. It is more forgiving when something is dropped than tile. I may get it refinished at some point but for now I just think it adds character. My girlfriend has linoleum and loves the easy care of it. I have seen people in her home reach down and touch it so it is a good quality and realistic looking. Friends have tile in their solarium that is heated and that is very nice but have hardwood in their kitchen. I prefer hardwood or tile as I like natural products. If I didn't spend so much time on my feet in the kitchen I might consider tile. Hope this helps and good luck on your renovation.
