- Q:i would like to paint over the old yellow tile on our bathroom walls, and of course in the shower. is that possible, and how can i do that?
- no,use a scraper and remove it,replace with corian
- Q:We are laying 18 x 18 porcelain tiles in our kitchen for an open house we‘re having in 6 days. We can‘t figure out when and how to tile under the refrigerator. Do we have to move the refrigerator into another room? Can we wait two days for the mortar and grout to set firm and move the refrigerator onto the newly installed tile so we can lay tile where refrigerator will go? If we do that, should we then wait 24 hours for that tile to set so we can move the refrigerator back into place? What is the best way to handle the installation? I would appreciate any thoughts on how this is most ideally done.
- I have always tiled under the fridge first if possible, move the fridge into the nearest room. Then after about two days after you finish then very gently use two pieces of plywood, half inch, move the fridge back over these two pieces, one at a time until the fridge is in.
- Q:Do you fill up the grout all the way to the top or only upto inner edge? We filled it up to the inner edge, but now the grout and the tile edges are starting to collect dirt very easily and it is very hard to clean. We are thinking of regrouting all the way to the top so that it will be easier to clean. Is that the correct way to grout these tiles?
- Most all tiles ( there are exceptions) are always grouted flush to avoid a couple of things. One is the problem your having now and the other is to protect the edging of the tile.depending on just how much more you have to fill in, you make have to dig some grout out to get a proper bond.. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
- Q:Can I paint over the tiles? If so what kind of products would I use and how would I prep the tiles?
- You okorder
- Q:anyone familiiar with laying tile flooring? never done it myself but i just bought a house and want to do it. is there anything an amature would mess up?? any info would be great
- It is not difficult as long as you properly prepare for the job. If it is a single room check if it is square and using a chalk line mark a line you will start with. Use the most exposed area of the room to get perfectly straight line of tiles. Once you start right the rest is just repetition. Another area of concern is what are you putting the tile over. Is is a concrete slab? If so just make sure it is does not have any areas that are elevated. If it is wood sub-floor definitely use backing like wonder board or something like that. Depending on the size of your tiles you need to choose a spacer size. Your retailer will help you with that. Another issue is your connection of tiles to the wall. Do you have a baseboard? If possible remove the baseboard and reapply it after you are done. It will look better and you will have easier time laying the tile. Consider getting a DVD on laying tile, I am sure you retailer can sell you one for just a couple of bucks. Good Luck!
- Q:I have a bathtub that the bottom row of tiles are getting loose on the top portion. A few have come out.The row above seems ok.Can the bottom row be resealed or replaced without interfering with the upper tiles? If so how?
- If you want a temp fix go to store and buy PL construction adhesive in a caulking tube. Clean excess with paint thinner and re caulk joints . When your ready to spend the money, call on a licensed tile contractor. Leaks behind the tub can lead to big dollars down the road. The kitchen and baths are big ticket rooms to work on, but when it's done right you'll be happier and never pay until the job is 100% YOUR CASH IS YOUR LEVERAGE, but be fair.
- Q:I will be making a 36 x 36 hearthboard for my gas fireplace stove out of slate tile. Do I need to space them and use grout in between or can I just cement them down next to each other like you would glue down vinyl tiles?
- No don t even try. First all tile and especially stones need the grout. Grout improves the strength of set tiles. Stones and again especially slate is not perfectly uniform and having grout allows them to look aligned. Dirt and debris ( and especially ashes) will get in those thin joints and be dirty and a PIA to clean and keep clean. Being on a hearth, w/o grout would be a fire hazard but at least you have a gas insert where this wouldn t be a factor. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q:I need to re-set some tiles on a roof that have slipped and replace some others. Also, I need to re seal my flashing around my vents. What am I getting into, and how hard is it to work on tile roof?
- the tricky part to working on a tile roof is staying on it. and not cracking any additional tiles. usually when i repair a tile roof i set up scaffolding there are a bunch of reasonss . the tiles sre heavy and hard to handle on just a ladder, the scaffolding offers a nice work area, and most important its alot safer, you can go to any rental store and rent scaffolding, when resealing around flashing and vents use a rubber butyl caulk for longer durability
- Q:is it correct if i divide 198 by 2.25= 88 tiles? help ty
- You are correct, but only if you don't have to cut any tiles and the area you're tiling is basically one big rectangle with nothing in it like counters or appliances. If you have to cut tiles, the general rule of thumb is to multiply by 125%. In your case, that would be 110 tiles -- and bear in mind that general rule doesn't always work.
- Q:hi!i hate the tiles in the house i‘ve just taken.they are blue with white dots.My landlord does not mind changes, but i can‘t afford to change the tiles.is there anything i can do o make them look different.can you paint tiles for instance?thank you for your answers
- I would make sure with your landlord about painting the tile first, He/she may have meant that he didn't mind you changing the tiles, but doesn't want them painted. If you paint them and it start peeling off, you've then left your landlord with a headache to deal with after you move out. This can lead to small claims court.
