Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.

Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.

Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

The earliest citation given in the Oxford English Dictionary for any word used as a name for this element is alumium, which British chemist and inventor Humphry Davy employed in 1808 for the metal he was trying to isolate electrolytically from the mineral alumina. The citation is from the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London: "Had I been so fortunate as to have obtained more certain evidences on this subject, and to have procured the metallic substances I was in search of, I should have proposed for them the names of silicium, alumium, zirconium, and glucium."

Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina."[69] But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound."

The -ium suffix conformed to the precedent set in other newly discovered elements of the time: potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and strontium (all of which Davy isolated himself). Nevertheless, -um spellings for elements were not unknown at the time, as for example platinum, known to Europeans since the 16th century, molybdenum, discovered in 1778, and tantalum, discovered in 1802. The -um suffix is consistent with the universal spelling alumina for the oxide (as opposed to aluminia), as lanthana is the oxide of lanthanum, and magnesia, ceria, and thoria are the oxides of magnesium, cerium, and thorium respectively.

The aluminum spelling is used in the Webster's Dictionary of 1828. In his advertising handbill for his new electrolytic method of producing the metal in 1892, Charles Martin Hall used the -um spelling, despite his constant use of the -ium spelling in all the patents[58] he filed between 1886 and 1903. It has consequently been suggested[by whom?] that the spelling reflects an easier-to-pronounce word with one fewer syllable, or that the spelling on the flyer was a mistake.[citation needed] Hall's domination of production of the metal ensured that aluminum became the standard English spelling in North America.

Q: So I calculated the answer to this problem and have an answer that looks like it is in the good range when compared to other people's answers online, however they have different weight measurements for their aluminum role, so here are my specific givens:Cost of 1 Roll of Aluminum: $1.59Area of 1 Roll of Aluminum: 6.96 metersWeight of 8inx 8insection of Roll: 2.7gMy answer is 1.57 x 10^-25Can somebody work this out and let me know if I am correct to three significant figuresIf not, do you know where I may have gone wrong? Thanks :)
you should be using dimensional analysislike this ($1.59 / roll) x (1 roll / 6.96m?) x (1m / 100cm)? x (2.54cm / 1in)? x (8in x 8in / 2.7g) x (26.98g / mol) x (1 mol / 6.022x10^23 atoms) $1.565x10^-25 / atom which you enter in your calculator as 1.59 / 6.96 / 100? x 2.54? x 8 x 8 / 27 x 26.98 / 6.022e23 andyou can easily see this is all mult / div so the sig figs in the final answer is the sig figs in the factor .with the least1.59 6.96 both have 3 sig figs 100 is exact .2.54 may or may not be exact (depending on who you're speaking with) but has at least 3 sig figs.8 has 1 sig fig .2.7g has 2 sig figs .26.98 6.022 both have 4 sig figs soyou tell mehow many sig figs should your report? alsorules of rounding (1) if the number to be rounded is followed by a number 5, round DOWN (2) if the number to be rounded is followed by a number 5, round UP (3) if the number to be rounded is followed by a 5 .(a)if the number to be rounded is even, round DOWN (b)if the number to be rounded is odd, round UP (4) all other numbers are ignored during rounding examples1.565 rounded to the 0.01's place 1.56rule 3(a) 1.575 rounded to the 0.01's place 1.58rule 3(b) why do we do this? we assume 50% of the numbers will be odd and 50% evenSo 50% of the time we round up .and 50% of the time we round downthat eliminates the .bias if we ALWAYS ROUND UP if the number is followed .by a 5right? 1.565 rounded up to 1.57 and 1.575 rounded .up to 1.58 is a 100% rounding up bias ! more examples 1.3659 rounded to 0.01 1.36rule (4) we ignore the 9 .why? because we assume the imprecise number is the 5 .and the 9 is therefore meaningless are you sure you measured the aluminum foil to +/- 1? did you mean to write 8.0 x 8.0?
Q: There have been a drastic change in the way we feed our cats now compared to the days when dry food is the mainstream diet of our catsWith the emergence and expansion of the field in feline nutrition, more people are now aware of the benefits of feeding a wet/raw diet and are drawn to itSo, have you changed the way you feed your cat and what prompted you to do so? Did you see a difference in your cat's overall well being after the switch? If you have not, why so? Is it cost related or because feeding wet/raw is inconvenient?
I think you should go for sony ericsson xperia ray
Q: If someone says he is working with Aluminum, and he works outside, what does that mean? What is his occupation?
A great healthy side would be mediterranean saladBuy a can of chick peas (garbanzo beans) a can of black beans, diced tomatoes, corn, and mix it in italian dressing or a vinegarette you love You can also serve baked potatoes with it, or just steamed vegetables, since the salad above has lots of fiber and some carbsLast idea - grilled corn on the cobServe with butter and rub with limeyou wont belive how tasty it is!

Q: The edges on my pie crusts keep getting brown or overly browned when I bake my pies.I even use a pie ring (a metal ring that sits around the edges of the pie, which is supposed to prevent over-browning) And, I have also tried putting aluminum foil around the edges of the pie(Which is basically the same thing as using the pie ring.)But, for some reason, the edges of my pies keep coming out a little too brown.Anyone have any other suggestions on how to keep this from happening? Thanks in advance.

Q: My mother went to the doctor and they found her aluminum levels to be high.My mom also for years has had high iron lvls but it wasn't until yesterday she found that aluminum and her iron levels are connectedFOR YEARS doctors didn't warn her of aluminum toxicityAnd my mother's 1 fear for the past 7 yrs is getting Alzheimer after working with Alzheimer patients when she was a care giverShe's been giving her doctors warnings that her stress and her mental stability is linked to Alzheimer's somehow from books she read but doctors did not care to listenYesterday they finally found high aluminum levels and hand her a paper that this can lead to Alzheimer and quietly dismissed her without even TELLING her what she can do to reduce the toxicity.I've been searching online like a fiend and the results are not accurate! She has aluminum in her blood someone please give me answers that these cruel doctors can never give us :(
Has this been diagnosed by a doctor.or a quack? It matters And Alzheimer's very clearly isn't aluminum toxicityThere is no evidence of a causal relationship between aluminium and Alzheimer's.
