- Q: whats the best floor shine you can use on tiles
- it really depends on what your after, you can go for a normal floor ploish, or wax. you can even use a good laquer, i use duranis 648 floor polish but that can be a bit over kill, more info is needed eg. what you want as a finish like wet finish, matt, etc.
- Q: Are unlevel floors always a sign of some sort of structural damage( framing, floor joysts etc) ? Or are there other causes? If so, what are they?
- There could be structural or foundation damage. Or it could be the house settling unevenly. It depends on what you mean by unlevel. Are the floors perfectly straight just tilting off to a side. Or are the floors warped, bowed? Or are there lips and noticable bumps? If you are looking at a house to buy, you might want to pass or have an expert look at it. If you own the house and want to repair, you will probably want someone skilled to look at it.
- Q: I am considering having Karndean flooring fitted in my living room, does anyone have this? It's the wooden floor full plank design that I am interested in. What exactly is it, does it look good, is it hard wearing, are there any negatives points about it?
- Knight Planks are laminated vinyl planks that look just like planks of wood. I had it laid to my gamesroom kitchen dinning and entry 2 months ago. It looks great just like real wood flooring and it is easy as to clean. The only I found out after I had it laid was it actually needs to be cut and polished after being laid (Carpet Hotline didnt actually include it in the price grrrr) you can do this yourself but the cost of the products is not cheap or have a professional who uses Karndean products to do it for you (this is what I did and it was a 3rd of the price of doing it myself) The only other thing you need to really consider is if you have pets especially dogs that live inside as it is very slippery for them and they have a lot of trouble walking on it, mine had so much trouble I ended up buying foam anti slip matting to run through the house so she can get around.
- Q: Is there anything that can be done to reverse the warping of wood floor boards? There is a crawl space..
- The cupped side has less moisture content than the bowed side. Normalize by the best available method. Most often I've seen moisture rising from a crawl space (dirt floor) which adds moisture to the unseen wood (floor joists, sub-floor, etc.). If the floor boards are painted/varnished or otherwise covered, it may have to be removed, then allowed to normalize. A better way may be to put a dehumidifier in the crawl space and just let 'er run, making sure to drain the collected water outside. Of course, this won't do any good if the dirt isn't covered with a non-permeable membrane, like Visqueen. In dry climes, just blocking the dirt floor may do the job, without the added cost of running a dehumidifier, but would take some time.
- Q: The floors are brand new laminate floors, only about 2 months old. We just moved in here and our realtor told us to use Orange Glo to make them shiny. Biggest mistake I have ever made. It looked great at first but now the floors look like crap. They are hazy, no longer shiny, and collect dirt like you wouldn't believe. I just now used ammonia, vinegar, baking soda and water to remove the left over wax build up. It helped a little and right after I did that I went over the floors with Bruce laminate cleaner. I thought it worked really well until I walked over the floor and then looked back and saw my foot prints all over the floor. So my question is, why on these newly cleaned floors can you see my foot print where ever I walk and what can I do to stop that? Also, do you have any suggestions on removing the wax buildup? Thanks
- Scrub the floors with plain water and microfiber cloths or a microfiber mop. Repeat if necessary. The microfiber will remove the build up without using chemicals. Laminate floors are very low maintenance. Ironically, if you use a lot of cleaning products on them, they will actually look worse...they will get smudges and streaks, like you're experiencing. And steam can absolutely ruin laminate floors. It can cause warping and even cause the veneer to peel right off. Having said this, exactly how do you maintain a laminate floor? Mostly just by vacuuming it. When you need more than a vacuuming, use a microfiber mop and plain old water. No cleanser, no vinegar, no nothing...just water. Let the mop do the work. Microfiber is fantastic at removing dirt and streaks and doesn't need a cleanser to help. And you want the microfiber very wet, but you don't want to have pools of water on the floor....a wet cloth or mop, but not dripping. If you don't already have a microfiber mop, you can buy them at Walmart, Target, Kmart, Home Depot, and even Dollar General. I've never used anything but a vacuum and a microfiber mop (plus water) on our laminate floors and they still look fantastic after many years and many cleanings. Hope this helps. -
- Q: We are going to install 20mm laminate flooring and I heard that the underlayment is just a sound buffer. We currently have subfloor that is pretty flat and even. Can I omit the underlayment? What are the disadvantage of doing so? The laminate flooring will not have glued on back underlayment either. It will be a floating floor.
- No, you may not omit the underlayment. Laminate floors are designed to float freely. If you do not install the underlayment for the laminate to float on the movement of the floor could be impeded and the floor could buckle or peak. Underlayment is very inexpensive. Upgraded foam will help to control a hollow clacking sound under the floor. At least get the cheap foam but I recommend the upgraded foam for acoustics. Unless you plan to invest in some serious coverage in area rugs. Also remember not to permanently attach anything to the floor or again the movement could be restricted. All laminate floors require a 1/4 gap around the perimeter of the whole floor including at the transitions. If you don't the floor will expand and the seams will peak or lift. Install quarter round to your existing baseboard to cover the 1/4 gap. In wet areas like the floor in front of the sink be sure to lay a bead of silicone in the gap to prevent moisture from getting in the core or under the floor. Good luck with your project I hope it helps, Jen
- Q: thank u very much but sorry just wondering if wooden flooring would make a difference to the warmth of the floor
- Temperature wise, I think that wood floors are warmer. Color wise, they are usually warmer as well because most of the time they are brown and when they are a little duller than plastic, that seems to warm the room up as well. I probably have a large bias against laminate flooring though. I think it is such a waste of money. It usually looks like hell from the beginning at least, and it will guarunteed look like hell eventually. Wood flooring can last forever, if you take care of it, and even if you don't take care of it, it still has that rustic quality.
- Q: We are fixing up a small house and need some ideas that aren't too costly for concrete floors. They have been sealed before and painted a medium gray color, but we were thinking hardware floors or another alternative. Any ideas of something we can do ourselves and still look professional?
- Hardwood floors are great for living areas, but I prefer vinyl flooring for kitchens and baths. Sure tile looks great, but it's also very cold on a concrete slab house. Vinyl is also less expensive. If the house is really small, opt for carpet in the living areas. You can get some great inexpensive remants in small sizes and it makes it cozy and is still professional. I think hardwood floors are going to be trending out here shortly anyway.
- Q: I'm in an old building with wood floors. I think it' time to move beyond Swiffer Wet.
- A 50/50 mix of warm water and white vinegar. If you have wax on the floors you will have to wax them when you're done mopping.
- Q: My dog slobbers a lot on the kitchen floor when we are out. We come home to lots of very watery slobber on the floor. Our current linoleum flooring is old and needs replacement. I would like something in style but it needs to withstand the slobber. Thanks for any suggestions.
