The III generation biomass burner promoted in July 2014:

Q: I have a tankless boiler that's used for both heat and hot water. We bought the house in the summer and since the hot water worked, we just assumed the heat would too. We turned on the thermostat for the first time and nothing happened. We still have plenty of hot water and have hear the boiling running to heat the water, but no matter what we do with the thermostat, we get no heat at all. Please help.: Without looking at your system the first thing that comes to mind is the motorised valve sticking. This is normally close to the boiler and it is inside a galvanised metal box on the pipe work. If you find it there is a lever at one end that you will be able to pull across to help try to release the valve. This valve runs in conjunction with your programmer to put water to which ever system is calling for heat. If the valve is found to be faulty you do not have to replace the whole valve. There is replaceable electric motor inside box that can be easily replaced. Cost ?10. Hope this is the answer. Should you get it going remember in future to kick in the system once a month during the summer.

Q: still have flames comin out of bottom of boiler checked the pipin all is clear, there is some soot inside boiler tho could this be reason for blockage? can feel draft thru pipe goin up chimey and feel heat comin out of removed top pipe of boiler, donrtt worry have pellet burner for secondary heat source. laid off so tryin to solve prob myself. have a valve for gas shut off on furnace when i choke off gas to furnace of course flames stay inside furnace and return to proper blue color, is there regulator as part of the pilot lghter gas valve?: If the vent is clean and has nothing, and nothing in there, no cob webs or nothing, time to clean the boiler, shouldn't be that much soot in there, some of these are kind of hard to clean have very small passages for the exhaust gasses to go through between cast iron sections, many different designs, any idea what you really have there..

Q: I live in Ireland. We have just bought a new house. In our old house our gas boiler (which was Vokera I think) heated both the radiators the water. However, in this house, the boiler does not appear to be heating the water. It will only heat when we switch on the emmersion. Are we missing a switch that can be turned to allow our gas boiler to heat both the water the radiators?: boiler systems are set up in zones. If the installer and/or previous owner did not set up a zone for heating domestic water, that would be the problem. If that is the case, you will have to have your plumber install a tank made for this purpose and have him make the tank one of your heating zones.

Get the name of the company, where they are located and the model number of the boiler. Call them, or see if they are on line, and get the information from them. The gas company should know as well, and can provide the information as well, or tell you where to get it. They shouldn't need to send out a tech if all you need is some information. is in their best interest as well as yours to supply information about things that use the fuel that they supply to you.

Q: Does anyone know how old this cast iron kohler boiler is?: I can tell you with some certainty that it is probably from around 1928 or so. And, the lagging on the pipes is probably asbestos, so be very careful around it. Those old cast-iron boilers, properly kept might well last over 100 years. On the other hand, it is operating at no more than 50% efficiency, if that. A modern hot-water boiler will run at 95% or more, effectively cutting your operating costs in half. I doubt that is a steam boiler (it might be, just that level of longevity for a domestic steam boiler would be record-setting), but if so you would go from a likely 40% or less to 80%, or so, still cutting your operating costs in half.

Q: working on a fourth class power engineering ticket here, so how can u use DP to tell water level: Assuming you are referring to DP of the steam drum of a boiler, one of the legs will be connected to the bottom while the other will be connected to the top of the drum. Since the top connection will fill with condensate, it will be at a higher pressure than the bottom connection, which will reflect the level changes. Therefore, there will be an increasing DP signal when the level drops. This is counter intuitive, since in most applications it works the other way. In addition, the density of the water-steam mixture in the drum is not the same as at atmospheric pressure, and varies with load changes. Therefore, the DP signal must be compensated for density to get the real level. .

Q: Hi.My Raven heat compi boiler has a really low water pressure its halfway between 0 and 1. I have heard it needs to be around 2.5How do I increase it? What would happen if I just left it.Also, I find its really really inconsistent with the heat. One minute its freezing the next I really think it hits boiling its so hot. Why is this?Thanks!: Underneath the boiler is a Filling Loop it is a flexible pipe which is connected to a 15mm (half inch pipe) and the other end is connected to a 22mm (three quarter inch ) pipe. On this loop is a tap or valve which you can open to allow more water into the boiler. Open it slowly until it is at 2.5 bar, then close it. Job done.The low pressure on your boiler was causing the erratic running.
