- We bought bunk beds for our kids at about the same age as your children, we also had space issues. 18 mths is good time to move to a big bed with a side rail. I would suggest getting a set with a removable ladder. Our son loved to climb and we had to take the ladder down or he was always on the top bunk. Our daughter had no problem climbing up the end of the bed to get up to the top.
