The hot wire is red plastic coated and looks modern to me.: you've got some good answers so far. if the wire turns out to be aluminum then proceed with caution because aluminum wire in small sizes turned out to be a terrible idea. it will need a special receptacle. if the wire is bx wire as described in your first comment don't bother with those greenies he mentioned because simply screwing your device into the metal box will bond the ground together. it uses the 6/32 screws provided as an excellent grounding means. you may want to consider using GFCI receptacles as well. I've never seen a new hot wire and old neutral wire like you describe and I've worked on a lot of older houses. before you get into trying to rewire your house realize that this is a very time consuming and aggravating project that will require two people who really should have experience doing this. if you do it then invest in a long (like 4 foot) drill bit and some glow sticks.

The potential may not be large but with fire it safer to err on the side of caution. Codes vary around the country so check there, but we typically pull the staple and determine how deeply the insulation is really compromised, if it is only through the external shielding an in-expensive way to safely repair it is with a shrink tube type of product. However, if any of the internal strands have been compromised the line would need to be cut and a junction box installed and the wire spliced back together inside the box. Hope this helps:-)

It can be used for phone lines (I used it for phone lines when I put an addition on my house) A phone line uses two wires. If you look at a phone jack the middle two wires are line #1. If you have second line, the wires will be on each side of those two wires (surrounding it). If you have a third line it will be on either side of line 2. So a three line phone hack will have 321123 but if you only use line 1 you will only be using those two 1's in the middle.
