Q: With a the recent problems of vegtables being recalled because of E. Coli contamination is there any way to help prevent my vegtables from being contaminated too? I know that E. Coli is a bacteria naturaly found in the digestive trac of animals. Since a lot of people use munure aren't they at risk of an E. Coli contamination in thier gardens? Also E. Coli can be present in the water supply people are using to water their plants. Is the only way to know for sure to have my soil and water tested? So far the only recommendation I've found is to throughly wash vegetables before consumtion.
If you wash your hands before handling the veggies, and don't use fresh manure from the local farm, you should be ok. If you do use manure, make sure it ages a year or so (google that) I think it is runoff from cattle holding pens and field workers who can't wash their hands that are causing the problems. The water used is from open irrigation channels, not well water. Well water shouldn't be contaminated, but you can get it tested (call up your extension service for info). You should do that periodically anyhow. If you have city water, there is no way there can be E. coli in there unless their system failed in a big way.
Q: The recipe is for Blue Cheese Bacon Mini Corn dogs. I was reading the magazine in a dentist's office, and didn't have time to right it down. I figured it would be on the Better Homes Gardens web site, but it isn't, and I couldn't find it any where else on line. Also...would cubed steak taste better than mini hot dogs with the blue cheese and bacon?
Well I see you were given the recipe. I have another suggestion for you. Whenever this has happened to me while waiting in a doctors office, if there's an article that I want to finish reading, etc. I just ask the receptionist if I can take the magazine home with me. They've never said no before. I also like to return the favor by taking my own read magazines and giving them to my doctors offices to add to their collection. Not only am I returning the favor but the magazines are put to good use, a lot better than throwing them away. (my trash company doesn't offer those recycle bins)
Q: I'm getting a garden ready for spring here in January. The soil is kind of compact and clay like. I have a bunch of leaves sitting on top of it now.I plan to till all the leaves into the soil, and till the soil to break it all up.Thinking about adding some dried manure that I can pick up from the lowes. Also, saw some stuff called clay breaker which is gypsum. Will it be a good idea to add perlite too?
i like to make a salad with iceberg lettuce, mandarin oranges, and silvered almonds. upload a vinagrettte dressing on the section so the lettuce does not get soggy. in case you have the persistence, upload some pomegranate. if no longer, upload some apple slices.
Q: I like Better Homes and Garden and Oprah.
Time, Good housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, National Geographic....thanks for asking....KB2k
Q: my wife and i just moved into our new home and it is freezing. We have electric baseboard heaters and they aren't doing the trick. is there a space heater out there that could help us keep warm this winter, right now it is -12 degrees out side we have put plastic over the windows. All of our doors have towels infront of them to cut down on the draft, please help we are freezing.
I would get a new portable gas heater, they are found in any hardware store. If you have fans you can put them on to blow the warm air down from the ceiling. One of the cheapest and economical types of electric heaters is those fireplaces because they produce heat and blow it. it will probably cost less to use one of those and turn off those baseboard heaters than to continue using the heaters alone. I suggest you look outside of your home to see if you can block any wind from getting to your doors and windows. Insulate around your hot water heater, put extra mats, carpets, even blankets on the floor. You can find a lot at Salvation Army and Thrift stores. Get foam spray insulation in a can and fill in your walls. For ten bucks you can plug the drafts. Wear warm clothing and have an electric mattress cover on your bed to heat up at night. Use last seasons clothes to package and place under your bed for a extra draft protection. Next year plant evergreen trees and consider solar panels.
Q: i was just wondering because i love the smell and beauty of the hemp plant and i would like to grow it in my garden, is this legal ? i live in Canada Ontario
Wow! I had no idea I even had a garden in Canada! Sure, okay! just be sure to sharecrop with me and we'll be good to go.
Q: The edition I had years ago would have been from around the late 1970s. The recipe was found in the Quick Breads section. It may also have been referred to as Orange Cranberry Bread.
The okorder , it is by runnergirl 630 This recipe actually belongs to Ocean Spray go to ocean spray and click on their recipes you will find the exact recipe except Better Homes changed the word shortening to oil and cut the cranberries by 1/2 cup Ocean Spray has has this original recipe on the back of the bags of cranberries I have been using it from many years
Q: I'm starting a small business that I hope to grow to a company in the future I do power washing, yardwork like helping someone with a garden and and also cutting grass and flooring and roofing

Q: Is this creature a pest that should be killed or is it harmless to a home and garden?
These people who are saying it's harmless or good have never had a garden. Snails will ruin your garden plants. They devour them just like bugs. Kill it before it starts multiplying.
Q: I am asking for a friend.
Bwho wants to be the first male prisinor to suggest a flower garden in the excercise yard ?
