- Q: We have a 1990 Plymouth Voyager and we need to put on new wheel bearings (well my husband says the whole hub)..does anyone know how to go about this?
- K Towe, I believe in that model of vehicle, the bearings are pressed on. Therefore, the spindle would have to be removed and taken to someone that has the equipment to press the old bearing off and press the new bearing on. If the problem is just the hub. then that is much easier. You just take the tire off, and pull off the hub and replace. You may have to beat the hub off because of it's age and rust and stuff. But I believe you will have to do that anyhow in order to get to the spindle. Hope this helps, J
- Q: I was going to repack my wheel bearings on an older trailer for the first time. I didn't even need a wrench to take the nut with the codder key through it off. Is this normal? There is no way the nut could have loosened before because the codder key wasn't bent or anything. should I reassemble the bearing with the nut being slightly loose like it was? Thanks for any replies....
- Yes, it's normal..a bearing nut is never tightened down, just snug..just a little more than hand tight..if you tighten it down, you can damage the bearing.

- It depends on what type of platform pedal it is. If they are the basic plastic type, the bearings in the pedal are sealed - When they've worn out (when that happened to my bike pedals they were probably a bit rusty?), it's time for a new set of pedals. If they are the slightly more expensive (usually alloy) pedals, the bearings are not sealed - so they are able to be replaced and therefore the pedals have a much longer life-span. If you do need new pedals, it would be worthwhile upgrading to the pedal type meantioned above, because at least those bearings can be maintained regreased when required. Though if in doubt, ask your local bicycle mechanic. Prices - it depends on what part of the world you live, others here might be a more in the know. A quick look in your local bike or even sports shop would be a good idea.

- Really no difference. Neoprene shields are a little easier to get out if you are going to clean or relube the bearings but you only have to take one out per bearing and only do it one time (since you don't reinstall the one you removed).

- Get a pair of good simple cheap bearings. I recommend MileHighSkate, Magic, of DBS. They are double rubber sealed to protect dirt from entering and cheap at $9. As long as you clean and lube any bearing, they will spin as good as any expensive one, so do not waste your money on expensive bearings.

- Ball bearings?? There are no ball bearings in the front end of a Ford Explorer, or any other car for that matter. Most cars use tapered roller(drum)bearings. They usually run 10-25$ per side, plus 5-15$ for new seals to put around them. Grease will be about 10$ for a can of good stuff. Do it yourself and save some money on the labor.
