Needle Roller Bearings (needle bearing) is a cylindrical roller with roller

- Q: This may seem like a stupid question as I am just learning to skateboard.I bought a brand new complete board with abec 5 bearings and they seem quite stiff. Am I suppose to oil them before I ride or do they eventually loosen up as I ride? Also I took the riser pads off because I heard it makes it easier to learn to ollie, will this help me? I have 51mm wheels so I dont think they will rub against the board.Thanks for your help.
- There could be a couple causes but lack of lubrication is not a likely one. Does your board have greased bearings? Many cheap ones have way too much grease which is great in that they will be more water resistant and not need maintenance for a long time. However, they will take a long time to free up. You can open them and clean out the grease and relubricate them with the right amount or other materials. If this is the case, the wheels will turn smoothly but slowly. For some reason many (most?) boards come without bearing spacers. They keep the bearings from jamming with side loads (like turning or having the wheel nuts on snug). Check if loosening the nuts makes the wheels run faster.

- Bones Reds try and get ceramic bearings keep maintenance on them every month and don't worry about ABEC ratings cause it counts for nothing and you will have bearings for at least a year or two depending on where and how you skate.

- Timkin bearings are considered top notch in the bearing field. Most of your major industry in the US use timkin bearings. Try the others anyway, chances are, you'll never have to replace them again as long as you own the vehicle.

- Yeah Tex pretty much nailed it. There are some abec 3's that are nicer than abec 7's. It really depends on the brand. Bones Swiss are nice, but overpriced imo. Bones Reds and Pleasure tool might be worth looking into as well, as long as they weren't made in China. If you go with shielded bearings you will need to clean them.

- What ever you do please don't try to change them yourself. Special tools are needed (press sleeves) and a press to do the job! A Toyota dealer will have an ultrasonic listening device which will tell you which bearings are bad. You, more than likely will not feel anything loose when the wheels are off the ground. Locally, NAPA will have SKF American made bearings. Carquest has Timken wheel bearings.
- Q: I recently purchased some hockey quad boots, but the bearings are slow so im looking to swap them with some abec 9s or red bones, but the axels on the skates are 7mm. Im used to 8mm axels and fast speed bearings, which are easy to find at that size. Are skateboard bearings suitable for quad skates with 7mm axels?
- You would need spacers to make the bearings fit snug over the axles. If no one makes them, you could try some of the brass tubing that you can find in hobby shops. ABEC is meaningless for speed. It relates to how much the bearings can wobble in high speed machinery. If your bearings are really slow, they probably have a grease or heavy gel as a lubricant. Try cleaning out the lubricant and putting in a little oil.

- If you're a beginner I absolutely 100% reccomend the Enuff Sketchy skateboard. Comes with all that stuff you said up there, only much better quality, ABEC 7 bearings, ABEC 3's are rubbish. I learnt on it, and it was amazing. Great Pop. Smooth. Held together way better than some of the more pro one's i have had over the years. In the UK its ?54.99. If you are american then I have no idea, but i know that it's cheap and better quality than the one you want to get. Hope this helps and answers you question. (:
