- Q:Hey. Could anyone please tell me if it would work to mix fast curing cement with Portland cement so it would cure faster than normal. Because with weather getting colder its really hard to cure cement properly, but since I'm working on tight budget it is really expensive to use only fast curing cement.Thank you
- Hi, Yes you can add a rapid set cement to your regular cement to make it go off quicker. I would recommend using an accelerator within the mix rather than using a rapid set. I would also (depending on what you are doing) use the correct insulation once you have poured the concrete - so use a thermal blanket, or straw and a plastic sheet. Keep it protected from the wind/water/elements for as long as you can - the longer the concrete has to set the stronger it becomes. As a word of warning however, if you put too much accelerator in or cure the concrete too fast, you will get a weaker concrete, that at worst will crack and crumble, so always consult the manufacturers instructions. Concrete setting causes an exothermic reaction meaning if you cover it properly it'll keep itself warm. Remember that if its below 5 degrees (Celsius) you shouldn't pour concrete! Hope that helps!
- Q:I live in an older house that has cement floors and they sweat bad .Is there anything I can do to make them stop sweating?
- Maybe an epoxy coating, if you can get it to stick on the wet concrete. Otherwise, consider a plastic vapor barrier, with foam pad and a floating floor above. Building codes now require a plastic vapor barrier underneath concrete slabs to prevent this problem. They didn't know to do this back then, that's why your old concrete slab is sweating. It actually lets a lot of moisture into your house, and I think it makes the floor cold in winter, too.
- Q:We installed bamboo fencing on our garden to add height to our outdoor wall. when rain falls, the poles get filled with water. We thought of placing an improvised metal roofing on it as what we see on other houses' fencing but we thought it will make the fence's look a lot awful. So we decided to fill each poles with concrete. will this do harm to the quality of the poles? Is it wrong to fill bamboo poles with cement?
- Using concrete seems like a lot of hassle and expense. Instead, I suggest filling the stems with dry sand up to 1 cm, or so, from the top, then closing the top with a sealant such as silicone caulk.
- Q:I have recently built a brick bbq and the cement/sand between the brick has gone really dry and a very light grey colour - nothing like the colour of the cement between the bricks on my house. I think it may be because I have too much cement in the sand to cement ratio, which is approx 3:1 respectively. Can you help?
- probably the house builder added a colorant to the mortar, which makes it darker. You can actually stain the dry cement on your BBQ (with wood stain) or add a matte sealer, which will darken it some.
- Q:I just had my drive cemented and it started raining 5 hours later. Will this hurt?
- it may effect the texture a bit but the cement should cure just fine despite the water. although the cure time will increase based on how much water was absorbed.
- Q:my maryland bridge fell out yesterday. the dentist wont be open till monday. its one of my front teeth. is there something i can use to temporarily cement it back in with.
- Unfortunately, there are no temporary cements that will hold a Maryland bridge in place. You will have to see a dentist to have it re-cemented. There is a protocol that needs to be followed for cementation of a Maryland bridge and only your dentist has the proper products that are needed to bond the bridge back into place. If you call the office and explain your situation to the answering service or call the number left for emergency patients--the doctor will get the message and will usually meet you at the office even during weekend hours.
- Q:Any one know the differnt ratios of sand and cement for the different strengths of concrete eg. 25N 35N etc.?
- Cement to aggregate ratios do not determine concrete strength. The water to cement ratio is what determines strength. Sand, gravel and other aggregates act as a bonding agent. Normal ratio is 7-15% cement to 14-21% water with remaining percentage as the aggregate.
- Q:What type/brand of contact cement is the best (best being the strongest) for 1quot; schedule 80 PVC pipe? The PVC pipe will be under a high amount of pressure, And from what I have read on-line the fittings are the most common to fail under high pressure. So I would like to get the strongest glue made so I don't have to worry with it for a few years. Also Im looking for tips on how to prep and glue the fittings for the strongest hold possible. Thanks for your time!

- Q:It's already cured for about 36 hours. Is there something i can do? Someone mentioned something about Hydraulic cement. ????????
- Hey, no matter where you live, that sucker is set up! It's not entirely to late though, what the story on the Finisher, did you do the finish or did you hire it, if the latter, call that sucker up,and tell him, better now than another 36 hours. You didn't want a smooth finish , did you? Confess, what aren't you telling us?
- Q:My sister is pouring a sidewalk alongside her house, and wants to have bare foot imprints of her and her two daughters. Its not my thing, but is this safe? I don't think wet cement can hurt you, but is it healthy to go barefootin' in, haha?
- I haven't worked too much with concrete... But! I'm thinking that it wouldn't hurt to put some vaseline on those little feet. I don't think the vaseline will hurt the cement. It might slow the drying process just a bit..... I don't know. You could always cover the cement with some press n' seal or other thin plastic...... the shape of the foot should still be made. I'm curious about this now..... You know, they do have kits sold at the arts crafts store...for kid's to making stepping stones. Maybe you should check one of those out first......
