- Q: HI ,THIS IS MY FIRST TILE PROJECT. I AM INSTALLING A BACKSPLASH ON SHEETROCK USING 4.5X4.5 PORCELAIN TILES. USING OMNIGRIP MASTIC APPLIED WITH A 1/4 X 3/16 V-NOTCH TROWEL. THE TILES HAVE A WAFFLE BACK. MY CONCERN IS DO I HAVE TO FILL IN THE WAFFLE DEPRESSIONS,WHICH SEEM TO BE 1/16 DEEP,BY BACK BUTTERING PRIOR TO APPLYING TILE TO COMBED MASTIC. ALSO, IS THE TROWEL SIZE CORRECT?P.S. WHY DO SOME TILES HAVE A WAFFLED BACK AND SOME A PRACTICALLY FLAT BACK? THANKS!
- Yes the trowel you have is the correct one for a mastic. And you have 2 options, spread some mastic and set a tile to see how the coverage is after you remove the tile. Set in place and give a gentle twisting motion, remove tile and if you have 80% coverage or better you good to go.If not you ll have to back butter the tile .. I can t tell you any other way because I don t know just how deep the pattern is.. As to why they have the waffle pattern, it foe a couple reasons.. One is for body strength after a glue or thin set fills this void. The other is an identifying type mark .. I can tell different tiles by their pattern at times.. - Thickness has nothing to do wither they go on the walls or floors. Generally speaking floor tiles are thicker , but not always.. There are several factors in determining if a tile can be used on a flor or not. All tiles can be used on walls but not vise versa. Some determining factors that dictate if a tile can go on the floor is tinsel strength ( how much pressure it can take before breaking in a special test),scratch and slip resistance ..These are 3 of the main factors that tile must be rated in before they can be allowed to be used on a floor. - Q: I am considering learning how to become a tile setter. Do any of you know if it is difficult for women?
- This is not a completelt difficult manual labor type of job. I'd say its a bit easier than working constrution or other labor jobs. My father owns a construction company and I've seen a hand of woman work for him with little or no problems. You can be anything you want, as long as you work hard and are dedicated to it. There's no reason you cannot set tiles as a living just becayse you are a woman. In fact, woman tend to do well with fields that require thinking and setting things up. I‘m planning to do the entire thing with leftovers I can get from other people who have finished their own tile projects. Is it possible ot use wall tiles on the floor for small areas? - just tell where you live and we all can visit you in hospital ..are you mad ?..do you want to throw money away ?..it will be like a skating rink ..you wont be able to stand up!...please ..go and have a lay down ..you will probably feel better tomorrow

- Don't half-a* it with glue....do it correctly: take off the bottom row of wall tile. install the tile base cut the wall tiles the proper size to fill in the remaining gap between the base and next row of tile.
- Q: i needed some vinyl tile but i saw that vinyl roll was a lot cheaper.is a vinyl roll just vinyl tile that hasnt been cut?
- That is basically correct. Vinyl rolls are sheet goods rolled in one piece to allow for seamless flooring. Tiles are boxed and set in place one at a time and is easier than installing sheet goods.
