Q: My kitchen floor tile has a number dings or chips caused by something heavy falling on them. Is there a way to repair these without having to remove/replace the entire tile?: Depends on how bad they are. Sounds like you have an very inexpensive tile on the floor or it would not have all the chips/dings. A cheap temporary fix would be to find a paint to match and just touch up. If you're renting, just try that. If you own, you could do that temporarily while you save up. When you replace though, make sure you get a good quality porcelain tile.

Q: Real tile or those that u just glue on?? why?: There are some nice vinyl self-adhesive tiles out there, and for about a dollar a square foot, it's hard to go wrong. Just do good prep work to make sure it's beautiful and long-lasting. Ceramic tile takes a lot of work. Additionally, you may need backer board for either type of floorcovering if there are any imperfections in your existing subfloor, and the combined thickness of the board, mud, and ceramic tile quickly adds up to a taller floor that can cause stubbed toes when transitioning off carpet areas. Bottoms of doors can begin to drag the floor too. Good luck and happy scraping.

Q: I am tiling my kitchen countertop and want to put in some wood trim pieces around the front edge like is in newer homes with tile countertops. Q: I want to install wood look laminate flooring. I have a sliding glass door with metal frame. I can‘t put shoe molding around it since it‘s metal so what do I do? Also, with porcelain tile, do I create some type of frame around the tile with real wood or is there a transition for this.: For the tile you can get metal edging to use as a transition from the tile to whatever else; the shape of the edging is determined by what it butts up against. Several different shapes are available in various colors. It is mortared in under the tiles to form a finished edge. You can get this stuff at Home Depot in the tile department.

Q: I am installing 4x4 ceramic tiles on a shower wall. I have been using a 1/4 x 1/4 sq. notch trowel, but am having trouble with the tiles staying put...should I use a 3/16 x 5/32 v-notch trowel instead?: When I use a trowel I use a V-notched trowel spreasding adhesive in a figure 8 configuration all over the walls, I use a trowel with 5/16th's groove.

Where can we find good prices on the tile?: Now a days your best bet is a Home Depot or a Lowes. I don't know if you have these stores in your area, but the do-it-yourself type stores are really outpricing the mom and pop stores. Hope that helps....if you need it installed you can call one of the smaller mom and pop type stores. They are usually very fair as far as pricing goes. The reason they do not offer the actual tiles as cheap as the bigger stores is because they don't buy the nearly the amount of product as the big guys. If they could, they would. Q: I have old, crumbly tile as a subfloor in my apartment. I recently put in vinyl flooring when I took my carpeting out. It now looks as if this tile (wood-like vinyl planks) are taking the shape of the subfloor, which was not perfectly even. I don‘t like that I see shadows of peaks and valleys in the new flooring in certain light. It also doesn‘t feel even when I walk on it barefoot, but I‘m extremely particular.1. Should a coating have been applied to even-out the old tile BEFORE the vinyl flooing was installed? (the company didn‘t want to take these up as they felt it was asbestos. the worker who installed the new floor said the old floor did not need a coating)2. Was this vinyl tile installed correctly?3. If it wasn‘t installed correctly, could this affect the vinyl tile/planks over time -- could it warp, perhaps? 4. What do I do if it was installed incorrectly and the company does not do anything about it without a fee?? (There‘s a warantee on the floor IF it was installed correctly only): Go visit a lawyer for an opinion. It sounds like the realtor knew about the problem with the drain and failed to disclose it. Did a licensed home inspector provide a report on the house for the bank? If so, who hired that person? The lawyer may determine you have a good case of fraud and negligence against them so could get them to pay for the repairs plus his fees. Sometimes just a letter from a good lawyer will bring them to Jesus.

Q: all ceraminc tiles, mounted in between to tiles maybe?: Your idea will not hold well and may be dangerous if you slip in shower and hit the shelf. Built-ins are better and safer.

Q: Over time the tiles in my apartment bathtub have turned yellow. It‘s not all of the tiles, just a few in the back/corner. I undoubtedly have hard water but I can‘t figure out why a few of these tiles are yellow. As far as I can tell, these are cheap plastic tiles (white). I have tried comet (with bleach), full strength bleach, vinegar/water solution, vinegar/baking soda, baking soda by itself, mr. clean magic eraser, and full strength CLR to no avail. The only thing that worked at all was using comet and scouring the tiles with steel wool. Although it scratched the surface, the actual scratch part wasn‘t noticeable. But there has to be an easier way than breaking my arm to get one tile cleaned. Any suggestions? If anyone wants I can email them a picture of the tiles.: try using Zud cleaner. found in Home Depot.
