- Q: Hi Folks,Currently I have a bath tub with a vinyl shower surround. I‘m considering removing the shower surround and replacing it with tile.I‘m just wondering how big of a job this is? - You can cut the edge of the tub off and lay the tile right to the top surface of the tub, leave a small gap for grout or caulking. make sure that the backer board is to the edge too. A sawzall will work with a fine blade.You will need to be careful when ya cut though. You can use thin set but there are different grades, use the more expensive one with the polymers in it if you want it to last for decades. You can also fur out the wall half inch or so to make up for the difference at the top of the tub, this will bring the backer board out to where you need it, where it is even with the top of the tub.

- Quarry tiles are genreally considered safe to bake on. The concern is with glazed tiles which may contain and may release lead in your oven - not a good thing! Unglazed quarry tiles are thick and are made of fired clay, basically as it comes from the ground. Thus it has other things in it besides clay. Ceramic tiles are generally thinner and but stronger. This is because they are made from refined clay in a powdered form. The end result is a more uniform tile, thus it is stronger.

- The right way to do it would be to remove the flooring and lay down some hardi backer or some cement board. However - if your wood floor is very very flat, and you consider the areas where that wood floor + the thickness of your tile meets up with other floor surfaces (e.g. carpeting or door door thresholds), it might be the easiest thing to do. Tile is a lot of fun. Don't skimp on making the right cuts and be sure to use spacers. Depending on what kind of tile you use - go with a smaller (1/4 or less) spacer so you have less cleanup with your grout. [Edit - I definitely agree with Crazy Man below. The waterproofing layer is a definite! Make sure you give it adequate time to dry, and then make sure you let the mud (adhesive) dry completely before grouting.] You might also consider something other than ceramic tiles, although there are some newer styles that are quite nice. A sealed porcelain tile or slate looks so nice.

- Vinyl tile you use glue. Some have the glue adhesive on the back, some you have to put the glue down your self with a 1/8 or 3/16 trowel. And like the other person stated they are very thin, meaning if you did try and set them in mortar and one little piece of mortar didn't mix good after a few weeks of use and maybe not that long that will create a lump and eventually ware through your vinyl. Don't even think about being able to grout. Now I have used glue with ceramic tile in certain cases. I don't recommend that either though. I use liquid nails or a pl 400 type glue in a tube to do risers on a stairway but the treads I used mortar. If you go to Home depot or Lowe's and pick out what type of flooring they should be able to lead you in the right direction on the glue vs mortar. good luck. you can do it
