The mortar and grout can be mixed with just water, especially for such a small job. Some stores might try to get you to buy the liquid additives for each. - Well i am going to dis agree for the fireplace i have seen marble with no grouting and the visual you gave me if its uniform slate such as squares or rectangles or a combo of both yes that would be breath takingly pretty. if its random odd shape the yes do grout. if i was doing a floor i would grout for fear of cutting my foot on an edge but then i most likely would come up with something new and contemporary.
