Q:How can I enrich my home vegetable garden?
compost.. either home generated or from a nursery, work it in deep.. i cover mine with almost a foot of leaves in the fall and turn those under every year along with cow manure.. if your garden is smaller but a few large bags of potting soil and work that in as well..
Q:I understand that the shrinking and expanding of the logs is a problem with log homes. Is this less with cedar logs? Is it ok to mix log types such as cedar and oak? Is there a sealer that will stop the logs from getting enough moister to expand?Have any of you ever used cement between the logs like the older style cabins had? Any body out there a log home builder?I have seen homes with adjustment bolts to at the top of the walls to compensate for the expansion. But i do not see that in many photos in the log home magazines, does this mean they are just shooting the photos from angles that will not allow the viewer to see the bolts?............. And in reality all log homes have these bolts, and it is unavoidable or what? If anyone can help me with this I would be thankful.
I doubt that there are experts in log houses on this site, though you may find some over in the Home Garden section. However, it IS pretty easy to find issues regarding log houses on the internet, and that is where you might want to start your research. This site is a log house maintenance firm which discusses many problems those types of houses has, including rot, types of chinking, etc.
Q:All the mags i see always feature million dollar homes with celebrities. I'm looking for a magazine that shows how to decorate a tract house that don't have 30 ft tall ceilings, and overlooks the beach.A mag with a lot of pictures and ideas. Like a crate and barrel catalog or ??
I think catalogs are excellent sources for inspiration. Some more reasonable ideas for us poor folk can be found in Better Homes Gardens, Good Housekeeping and Country living. But I enjoy walking through design centers that have vignettes of rooms set up just to steal ideas. I find that what they've done, I can modify to my own color scheme, my own lifestyle and my own budget! I live very near the beach (no view) and I draw much inspiration from nature around me.
Q:My 9 year old girl wants a garden. We live in MN and want a garden that produces things fairly fast. Any suggestions?
Get one of those strawberry hanging planters (the upside down strawberry planters). Get the eversweet strawberries. They will flower very soon. They will have flowers and fruit year round and they will be above ground keeping off slugs and other pests. Radishes are good for planting in the ground from seed, they grow rapidly, and are ready for picking soon. The only negative is that kids usually aren't thrilled about eating them. Tomatoes are beautiful and grow large fairly rapidly. I think everyone should grow a few tomato plants since there is such a huge difference between store bought tomatoes and home grown. THey might take longer to get fruit from, but I think it would be a good lesson to your daughter at an early age about the benefit of home gardening. Also, I think she'd get a kick out of the wonderful smells of the tomato plant.
Q:Is there a peak time for common garden weeds? I know they're around all year but when will the seedlings stop springing up everywhere?
There okorder /(20 % costs over $10/gal but less than Scott’s Weed B Gon at $15/gal. Only the hardiest weeds need 20%, 10% does for most weeds. 2-Xpress, Matran or Alldown, but these are to be used on weeds less than 5 inches tall. 3- Pelargonic acid, found in many plants, is currently available in a commercial herbicide, Scythe, but is not yet approved as an organic herbicide.
Q:What is the best way to get rid of moles in the yard/garden? I live in central Ky.?
Here's an earth-friendly idea from Mother Earth Magazine. Sink wine bottles into their tunnels...open end up. Fill the bottles to different levels with water. The wind blowing across the open ends causes harmonic sounds that scare away the moles.
