- Yes, they can. The only difference between sunlight and other light all around us is the composition [ie the specific frequencies of photons combined in that ray of sunlight], and technically the plants use the energy, so due to E=hf, when the frequency is higher [eg sunlight, UV light] you get more energy, the plants thrive more, but any light is okay as long as the energy is not too low [or high] for the plants. That's why plants can grow from infrared light, but they don't thrive cos there's just too little.

- Actually, when you shine a light through your hand, it IS the blood and tissue that makes it red. In the visible electromagnetic spectrum, red has the lowest wavelength out of all of the colors and violet (purple) has the highest. This is why you don't see red in the ocean. Red light dies out the fastest when exposed to resistance. Violet and blue are the highest frequencies and they last the longest. If one were to hop in a submarine and travel straight down, first red would disappear, then orange, then yellow, then green, then blue, then indigo, then violet.
