If you camp out on the copper with low heat, by the time you get it hot enough the flux is gone and the copper has oxidized and nothing will stick. You are not trying to melt the copper, just trying to get the copper to melt the solder BEFORE the flux burns off. The flux is your friend, without it, it's gonna oxidize. Practice. Get some copper and some old fitting and practice.

- You are correct. NO ADDITIVES at all. Just human waste. No grease etc. I have had this house for 34 years and have only had it pumped about 4 times. Now the new ordanace says I must get it pumped every 3 years. NO ADDITIVES.

- If it is smoking or looks like it esp. in cold weather, condensation. Completely normal. If it is white smoke that smells sweet, blown head gasket/cracked head/cracked bolt. Blue smoke burning oil. Black smoke burning excess fuel (too rich). Most people talk about white smoke so check signs. Loss of coolant, milky oil, low compression, constant overheating, loss of compression etc If none apply, I'd say condensation.
