- I agree with Aaron, they work better off on object then your back. Lighter resistance bands are what you want to use, and yes just like normal shadowboxing (where you don't fully extend your joints) it is just fine. I know a ton of strength and conditioning coaches who use them in this manner for fighters, I have used them. I can tell you it makes you immediately more aware of when you are arm punching, vs. using your whole whole body. (This is why you want it based off a stationary object and not your back, across your back it only affects your arms, with a stationary object you feel your balance and everything affected by the resistance. It is helpful for building fast twitch fibers, but again this is light resistance that you can move up with. It is not an immediate improvement, i.e. a month into when you go without bands you are going to be amazingly fast. But you will develop more speed, better balance, and use your body as a unit better. You will hit harder, and be faster. Not at an amazing rate over regular shadow boxing, but there is a difference, and it does impact you. Not to a HUGE degree, but enough that after training with it, you recognize its usefulness. I would add the proviso that you are working with an experienced instructor on it, who can help you refine your mechanics that the resistance bands are going to make painfully obvious to you.
