- Q:I had a hole in a bathroom drain pipe and am replacing a 4 foot section of the pipe. I got a 3 inch no hub coupling and am attaching it to the new pipe and section of old pipe that is still in place. But when I put the coupling over the section of old pipe it is rather loose. While when I put it on the new pipe it fits very snug. I'm not sure if this is a problem. When I tighten the clamp maybe it won't make a difference. Both sections of pipe are supposedly 3 inch. - i agree with rob.. this has to be a combustion air problem. your attic fan is pumping air out of the house. that air has to come from somewhere, otherwise your house would be a giant vacuum. the attic fan is starving for air and its pulling it from the place with the least resistance, seems that would be the water heater flue.

- Ask the maintenance people. Personally I doubt if a little smoke or water would set off a sprinkler system, if it did - well you know what students are like, they'd set it off for a laugh ! Use your boiler don't worry. There might, however, be ioniser smoke detectors, which can be set off by a lot of steam or if someone burns the toast - you may set an alarm off, but probably not the sprinklers, my guess is that it has to get pretty hot in the room before they will go off..
