- Q: I want to have an illusion in my room that looks like a car falling thorught the roof. You would look up and just see, maybe the front corner of the car. - Q: My A&#92;C and Heater have problems keeping up in Hot&#92;cold weather. Its summer now (I live in the Stl area) and when its 90+ sunny my house will not get colder than 80 degrees A&#92;C going non stop. The A&#92;C is putting out anywhere from 59-62 degrees and from what I can tell is sized properly. In my ceiling is blown in insulation at about 4-5&quot; sitting just above the 2x4s some places more some less. The vaulted ceiling being a little more at around 6&quot; Is this enough? Is my problem the Heating&#92;Cooling unit or is there not enough insulation?
- The minimum ceiling insulation should be R-30, with R-40 being the norm in the northern part of the U.S. The depth of insulation required to produce a R-30 depends on the type of insulation. Blown-in fiberglass will have about R-2.25 per inch, blown-in cellulose has about R-3.5 per inch and fiberglass batt has about R-3 per inch. In case you're not sure what type you have, fiberglass insulation looks like cotton candy, while cellulose looks likes ground-up newspaper. Batts are the best to install as there will be less airborne particles to breath, get in your eyes, etc. You just cut them to size and lay them across the ceiling joist so they seal any gaps caused by the ceiling joist, fans, light fixtures, etc.
- Q: Our basement bedroom does not have insulation in ceiling between joists but it is possible to insulate from another area that is not finished but I would have to use the insulation which is blown in between the joists. Is this a good insulation and is it practical to do for noise reduction? Otherwise, we would have to tear out the ceiling in the bedroom and use the fiberglass insulation. Do you have any other ideas or suggestions for noise reduction? This is a new home.
- You wouldn't be able to poke in Fiberglass that's for sure. Also it doesn't absorb that much sound anyway. Blown in wouldn't help that much either (after a couple of years it settles anyway). You appear to be looking for sound proofing. There are many different kinds of ceiling tile out there and you should check out as to which works best and include wall material too as just the ceiling alone may not do the job well enough plus you would need to do the door too. (There isn't much you can do about the windows unless you block them). Best of all check out a building materials store or someone who has done something similar. Good luck!

- Yes, it is fiberglass, intended to keep heat from the incandescent bulbs from overheating the ceiling. The foil is to reflect radiant heat for the same reason. Note that flourescent fixtures, which run much cooler, have neither of these heat barriers.
- Q: When I moved into my house the ceiling was cracked from the ceiling fan out to the walls in two directions. I don't want to put new wall board up and repairing the crack is not possible according to my Husband. What are some ways to cover the ceiling up?
- Get some plaster or drywall mud and fill it in. It won't fix the problem but it will get rid of the crack. Paint over it and be done with it.

- Are you asking me if I need a ladder rack? Or are you wondering what to use to hold a fiberglass ladder to the ceiling? Option 2) you could use 2 giant hooks that screw into the ceiling, and that should be sufficient. However: since those ladders are a bit heavy, why not do yourself a favor and store it horizontally on a couple hooks near the bottom of the wall instead? It's a lot more convenient that way, and safer for everyone concerned.
- Q: I just bought a home with an unfinished basement. I was thinking of finishing the basement and creating a game room. I wanted to soundproof it but I dont want to spend a ton of money. I know that I can buy soundproof drywall but that stuff is expensive!Is there anything that I can stuff between the ceiling beams to soundproof the room? I dont want to put in a double layer of sheetrock becuase the ceiling is already only 7 feet.Thanks!
- come off a dollar and do it right, it is a one time expense for crying in the barn already.. rk is a great sound dampener... a music production room in a hippy commune i lived in back in the 70's had cork on the walls and ceiling and door. it was great...the musicians could be in there amping totally to the moon and you could barely hear them in the rest of the house.... cry me a river about expense or cry a river about noise...your choice.
