- Think of it this way. Viking metal is a part of folk metal - a band that is viking metal is ALWAYS folk metal, but a band that is folk metal isn't necessarily a viking metal band. Get it? Anyway I don't think epic metal is recognized as a legit genre but a lot of people use the term. It just means metal with an epic sound - it's dramatic, it's grand, it takes your breath away. Usually it's associated with power/symphonic metal, but I'm sure you could find bands that play an epic sort of folk metal as well - or folk metal mixed in with power and/or symphonic metal. If that makes sense.
