- Q: We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship.Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Is there a particular paint/primer that seals off from moisture particularly well?
- It's better to remove the tile altogether, including the old backer board. We did that as insurance, we found there was no insulation in the wall so it was good that we did. Cover the entire wall with sheetrock (green board, meant for a wet location) then glue the beadboard in place with water proof adhesive (applied with a caulk gun). It's worth the extra time and effort for your own house and you'll know it's done correctly and will last for many years to come. Good luck, been there done that and still in the process. It's a labor of love, I guess! :o)

- Plaster indicates an older house. My guess is that the tile also is raised about a half inch above the surface of the wall and there is a nice bull nose tile that curves into the wall. If I'm correct thus far then there is no plaster under the majority of the tile. Back in the day, the plasters would attach lathe down to just below where the top of the tile would be then plaster only that. Then the tile setters would attach a heavy steel mesh the rest of the way down and strike mortar over top to create a proper backing for the tile. When you go to remove the tile it will come off with great difficulty and in large chunks because of the steel mesh, which by the way is nailed to the studs. By the way, the tile you have can be painted or new tile can be installed over it.

You'll have to work fairly quickly because grout becomes hard to work once it starts drying out. Work in a diagonal pattern and go back over any low or missed areas. Allow the grout to sit for 20-30 minutes. You'll know the grout is starting to cure when there is a light haze on the tile surface. Using a sponge and a bucket of clean water lightly buff the tile to remove the haze. This step may have to be repeated once or twice to be sure that all of the excess grout has been removed from the tile surface. If you want to seal the grout and tile, there are a number of sealant products available but you'll need to wait 3 or 4 days before applying in order to allow the grout to cure properly.

There are on occasion markings or initials on tile backing that will give away the tile manufacturer. - John, I know of no one that has painted over ceramic tile and is satisfied with the results. It's a finish that will not hold up through the constant use of cleaning products. Retiling is honestly the anser. It can be done easily. You'll want to cut through the drywall along the edge of the existing tile aolong the entire perimeter. Remove all the drywall and tile (still adhered to the drywall) in sections. Place cardboard or something that will protect the tub while this process occurs. After that install 1/2' hardi-backer with 1 1/2 screws and install the tile. If you use the 4x4 glazed tile, you can rent a tile cutter for about $15 (or buy one for double that). The tile will cost about $1.40p/sf. Typically you'd need about 70sf of tile (or around $110.00), and 50 pcs of 2x6 cap (about $70) and 2pcs 2x2 corner cap ($4). Grout will run $15. The hardi backer will be $50. Mastic to set tiles will be around $30. An alternative is lay tile over the existing. You will have to remove the existing soap dish to do this.. You save the cost of hardibacker, and some labor. If you do endeavor into this, set the soap dish with the grout, not the mastic. it's a common mistake by DYIers. Use some tape to hold it in place until the grout dries.
