Q:do i remove toilet, vinyl tile and sink cabinet. under lay for tile? what holds ceramic tile down?: you really should pull the vinyl up, even if it's a hassle, because it could buckle in the future and affect your tile work. Go to your home store and see if they have a solvent that will loosen the adhesive holding the vinyl down, then scrape it all up. Hopefully it will be concrete underneath and not another layer of vinyl (happened to us in a kitchen once). Clean it really well, then do your tiling. Be sure to use the correct adhesives and grouts. There is also a sealer you can use that will insure the grout never stains, something *she* will appreciate when she never has to get on the floor with a toothbrush to clean out the muck between the tiles. :) Good luck and happy holidays!

Q:We have tiled around our jetted tub about halfway up the wall and the top and around the edges does not look finished. Do we add trim there or something else?: We finished off our tile with quarter round tile. We used the same color as our wall tile but with a slightly duller finish. My point is you can use a coordinating color or finish if quarter round is not available for your exact tile.

I want to redo the bathroom stalls, but heard from some people that it could take forever, and that i might end up messing up the the drywall? to me it sounds simple... just get a spatula or something of the sort and scrape off the tiles... is that how it goes or is it more difficult than that? has anyone out there done this? what tools would i need? what type of tile cutter do you suggest? i‘d like to replace the tiles with something bigger... maybe 10x10 tiles?: Being that your house is pretty new most likely the tiles are on drywall and set using latex glue. However if they were set using thinset cement on drywall it will be a little harder or if the builder used the older method and set the tiles in cement on wire mesh, then it's a beast and everything must come down. Using a stiff putty knife start at the top and tap the putty knife behind the tiles and gently pry away from the wall. You will have some damage to the drywall, apply drywall compound, let dry sand down and paint with primer. NOTE: Be sure to wear eye protection and gloves, broken tile is very sharp. Also protect your tub by installing a piece of plywood on top of it to prevent falling tiles from damaging it. It's also not a bad ideal to just tear out the drywall and tile and install new backer board. Maybe a little more work money but In the long run it will make for a much better job. If you are going to use that large of tile you really should tear it out and use the cement backer board and thinset as your glue as these tiles are heavy. Rent a wet saw to cut the tiles.

Q:Complete DIY newbie here with an outdated bathroom that I want to make a master. The floor is covered in hideous 1x1 tiles. I will replace this tile with some 12x12 or 8x8. Any suggestions on how to get this stuff off?: A lot depends on just how its layed and the substrate that it s over. I ve seen tiles done over a thin plywood, in which case you use a hammer, bust it up and remove the ply wood and all and start new. The tile could be on a mud bed in which you can either use a hammer and wide masonry chisel and go along and chisel then off . Then you can decide to remove the mud bed or go over top and reuse that substrate. Pull the stool or an in floor heat vent , if you have one, and you can determine what is under the tile. What looks like hardwood in the hall ( I can t tell for sure), and if the tile is semi flush with that, chances are its a mud bed. I m don t think its a cement board since you say it was done in the 70s and cement board wasn t invented untill the mid 70s. Q:I am trying to decide between installing hardwood or tile floors in my kitchen remodel. Any thoughts on pros and cons of each? Thanks.: Ceramic tile. It will take the traffic better, wood is prone to water damage Tile cleans much easier than wood and will take moppings where wood you should never mop( water can damage it). Grout, when you seal it,cleans easy. Wood looks great other places and add value to a house ( ceramic does to) but not in a high traffic water prone area such as the kitchen. Much more maintenance than ceramic. Wood will cost a bit less butt ceramic will installed properly will last a life time with out having to be refinished.. Q:i have vinyl tile in my dinning room(high traffic) its new but its not brillant ,and i saw a mantenance guy last night in wallmart using a buffer machine to pollish the tile..my question what kind of pad the used?they use any quimical with this pad?..how often this treatment its needed?: You need to 1st find out what kind of tile you have. Some tile is made with a flat sheen. If your's isnt, wax and buff. You can rent machines pretty cheap and usually a few times a year will do it. Good Luck :)

Q:We are buying our first home and want to do some updating but are on a budget. We are not experienced in do-it-yourself home projects but would like to try.How simple or how difficult is installing carpet tiles? We know nothing about them really.: you can do it- just follow instructions. When I was a kid we garbage picked the carpet stores for left over remnants- any size. When we had enough we took them to the basement and randomly glued them to the floor for a patchwork design. If a kid can glue carpet down- so can you.

Q:The previous owner placed VCT tiles on beautiful hardwood floors. I want to remove them, without messing up the wood too bad, since I want to sand and wax the floors after I remove them.Is there a way to do this without ruining the floors?Can I rent a machine? Should I try to heat up the tiles? They are glued on very well, and its a large area. The machines I have seen so far, look like they are made to remove tiles that are placed on concrete. Thanks in advanced: Try a product like Goof Off first. They sellit at Home Depot or Lowes. It cost about $4.00 for a 16 oz can. Wipe on liberally with a cloth and wait a few minutes and scrub off with same cloth. It does have a somewhat harsh smell at first, so make sure adequate ventilation is available especially for a child. I am a contractor and have used this on several types of floor adhesives, but of coarse there are some that will need to be sanded.
