Q: I got my timing belt done on a 1999 Civic Si on September 26 @ 113,699 miles. at 116,9xx miles I bent a valve on my third cylinder. Anyway to check?: Yes, unless you've left out a critical detail (such as getting water into a cylinder), the timing belt is the most likely explanation for your bent valve. It doesn't neccessarily mean the person who 'did' your timing belt buggered it up, it may have just slipped. The short-ish period between getting work done and the valve getting bent is a little suspicious, but slips happen, especially with belts (as opposed to chains and dual row chains). This puts you in a difficult situation. You may also want to inspect your valvetrain, piston face, and the bore of that cylinder for damage.

Q: Ok, so I took my car in for maintenance (Mustang GT convertible 2002) and the mechanic told me the valve gaskets needed to be replaced and when he gave me the estimate, they were two seperate charges for valve gaskets and valve covers, total of about $250.00 not including labor. Fel-pro is the brand name of these gaskets. #2. The valve stem seal kit costs $28.20 and again, Fel-pro is the brand neme. First of all does your car smoke slightly when you decelerate? If not there's absolutely no reason to bother having these seals installed. If the car does smoke when you decelerate valve stem seals are nothing but a stop gap for the real underlying reason the car smokes.

Q: Whenever sports cars are referred, people talk in terms of 'valves'. ex: v8, v12 etc. What does this all mean? Also they sometimes say that a v8 makes a great noise. why? How does the number of valves effects the performance? Many thanks.: When talking about car engines, references such as v4, v6, v8, v10 and v12 are not for the number of valves. it is for the number of cylinders. The more cylinders that an engine has, the more fuel it consumes and most of the time, the more horsepower it can make. There are exceptions to this though. Regarding the noise of the engine, i would agree that a v8 sounds very good when it is roaring. Valves are actually the openings for fuel to get into the cylinders and the exhaust to come out from. Most modern engines have two valves for incoming fuel and two valves for the exhaust making a total of four valves per cylinder. hope that clears it for you
