FAQ

Is it best to go for a more powerful vacuum cleaner?

The power of a vacuum cleaner’s motor is measured in Watts. The higher the Wattage the better it will clean, as long as the machine is well designed with good air flow and suction power too. However, the higher the wattage, the noisier the machine will be. With upright vacuum cleaners. you don’t need to have so much wattage or suction power as you do with a cylinder cleaner as the dirt has less distance to travel before it reaches the bag or dust container. The type of brushes are more of an important consideration with uprights than the power. You don’t always want to have a vacuum cleaner operating at full power for example, when cleaning upholstery or curtains, so it’s useful to be able to adjust the power level yourself.

Which attachments should I look out for?

Most vacuum cleaners come with three attachments, a crevice tool, upholstery and dusting brushes and a small head which is best for vacuuming stairs. You can also get additional turbo brushes which have their own motor for extra suction which are useful for cleaning deep-pile carpets or a power cleaning head which has electrically powered rotating brushes. A hard-floor or parquet brush is useful for wooden or tiled floors. Some cleaners have extendable tubes which are useful for hard to reach areas like cobwebs in the corners of ceilings.

I have a large house? What should I look out for?

Look for a cleaner with a large cleaning head – this will help cut down the amount of time it takes to vacuum a room. Also get as long a lead as you can get to cut down on the number of times you have to unplug the lead and plug it in again. You may also want to consider getting a model with a large capacity dust collector or bag so that you don’t have to empty it as frequently. If you have a lot of stairs, you may want to get a cylinder model with a long stretchy stair-cleaning hose.

Q:We have a mischievious dog in the house that keeps chewing and destroying things. The power cord he severed belonged to a Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive vacuum cleaner and it will take about $25 to replace, rather than buying a whole new vacuum cleaner. I was wondering if anyone thought it was a dumb idea to attempt to remove the back part and replace this cord or if it could be done at all? If you have any experience or knowledge in the structure of vacuum cleaners, your input would be greatly appreciated. :) The model number is 11635923500.

Q:how many brands are there except Shark navigator?have u tried them? are they really easy?
The okorder /... I believe that Hoover originated the lift off design a few years ago. I've not used this one, but I have seen it kicking around warehouse retailers when was first released. To be honest, I think that the lift off canister design is far more hype than actually useful - regardless of the brand name. The theory of a smaller, portable vacuum is good, no doubt, but having to carry/hold the vacuum in one hand while you operate it with the other kind of defeats the purpose.
Q:I have a bug vacuum (toy) and it doesn't work very well. The vacuum has 3 power settings and is turned on by pressing a trigger. I was gonna just pull out the circuit board and add more batteries, but it seemed like a good idea to ask on the internet first, because I know very little about electronics and stuff. Some advice from somebody who knows what they're doing would be much appreciated.
Don't waste your time on it. With both the small size and design of that BI fan you are not going to get a vacuum of more than a couple inches of water. It is designed more for volume than for suction. In comparison, none of the hand- held so called vacuum cleaners are much better and they usually have better impellers.
Q:I saw this movie once, it is from mid 80's or so and I think it's American - 3 or 4 married women, nearly broke by the end of each month, decide to steal the money from big glass ball, placed in the hall of shopping mall, using the vacuum cleaner. What's the name of the movie? I forgot who starred in it. Thanks.
Mad money.
Q:My roommate is allergic to cats, and when I got my kitty I told her that if her allergies got too bad, I'd send him to live with my dad, but I do NOT want to do that and am trying to find a good vacuum for someone with allergies. I'm looking for something with a HEPA filter. Can be bagless or have bags. I'd really prefer an upright to a canister. Looking in the price range of $60-$200, but willing to hear suggestions for more expensive models. MUST HELP REDUCE ALLERGENS!!
People okorder / okorder it has a six-layer filtering system (including the HEPA, germicidal UV, and active carbon filter) and odor, dust and allergen sensors which easily detect pet dander, dust mites, chemicals, pollen, mold spores and many more.
Q:They're louder than a car!Yet, there are some vacuum cleaners that have the silent function... why can't all vacuum cleaners have that function?
I now but they are hollow so maybe that's why?
Q:I hear great things about there products but don't the cost something like $500. who owns one and do you like it?
In the past, I have bought vacuum cleaners that were less expensive, only to have them wear out, break, or completely die on me within a couple of years. Dyson has put in so much time and energy into the designing of his vacuums that you never have to worry about them wearing out before their time has truly come. My Dyson is incredible. It's well designed, picks up everything in sight, never loses suction, and is so cool looking that even my man volunteers to vacuum. They truly thought of everything when they designed the Dyson vacuums. I have an Animal at work, which is a great upright, and a stow-away one at home. As an added bonus, neither of them need bags. Yes, they're expensive, but they last a long time, and do a good job, so in my books, it's worth it.

Q:has anyone ever bought a Dirt Devil Purpose for pets cyclonic upright vacuum? how did it work?? please help me. i'm about to go buy one from walmart but i need to know how well it works.
Consumer Reports Magazine has a long article, with product ratings, on vacuum cleaners in the current March 2008 issue, on page 36, that mentions Dirt Devil three times. There is another article on vacuum cleaners in the October 2007 issu
Q:Our vacuum cleaner brush roller is not working. My husband has already tried to fix it himself, but he can't find out what's wrong. We've already replaced the belts and the brush roller doesn't seem to be worn down or missing any pieces. Does anyone have any idea how much it might cost to get it fixed if I take it into a vacuum repair shop? The vacuum is only a year old and everything else works fine, the roller just isn't rolling.
This may sound silly, but it happened to me. Our vacuum brush roller stopped working, too. Turned out that the sliding switch that gave the bare floor/carpet option wasn't fully engaged. If you have a switch like that, check it. Also, if you still have the manual for it you may want to check under the troubleshooting section or look on their website. At any rate, I take my vacuum cleaners to Sears for repairs. It usually runs me $60.00 - $80.00, depending on the problem. You may want to shop around. Ask people in your area who they go to. Sears is more expensive, but they're reputable and stand behind their work. Hope this helps!
