- Q: My year old Bissell vacuum is starting to not work so well. It has way less suction than it used to and it makes weird sounds. Our upstairs is all hardwood linoleum so all I'm using it for my crazy 6' X 9' rug in the living room. Maybe all that cat hair is extra hard on vacuums? I don't know why I can't find one that will last. The one I had before this was a Eureka and it still had suction, but the rotating brush in the front broke out after 3 years of use. And it was used in an all carpeted house.What I love about my vacuum most is the compartment in the front that lets me easily dump out the dust instead of having to change a bag. But how to I search through the various upright vacuum cleaners to find one that isn't going to die after a year? Some of them say they are designed for many years, but how do I know what is real in those advertisements? Can any of you tell me what you use and how long it has worked for you? Thanks.
- I got a Dyson for Valentine's Day last year (it's what I asked for). It is wonderful! My neighbor borrowed it the other day and couldn't wait to find out what kind it was. - I know my Philips vacuum cleaner has a 'universal motor'. A universal motor can be operated by both ac or dc but the voltage is different. You can connect a dc to the plug pins to make it spin. But not if it is equipped with variable speed. In many cases, 12V dc is just enough to make it spin but higher voltage makes it spin faster (I have ever made it run in this way). A universal motor is very commonly used on power hand drills or other power tools. Its advantages are light-weight and high torque at low speed. This motor also has its negative sides: it is noisy and has (carbon) brushes. maintenance is therefore needed and its has spark when running. This motor is also called series motor because all of the windings are connected in series. In the contrary, squirrel cage induction motor is more common for other applications, such as fans, water pumps. Its advantages are quiet and maintenance is minimal.

We've gotten rid of all our carpets - vinyl or laminate floors only, which has eliminated all the pet odors. But it is still hard to get rid of all the pet hair (etc) that builds up on all their favorite bedding or couches.I've got my eye on the 1400 Series canister vacuum ($899! What am I thinking??!?!) - I am of the opinion that you can't go wrong purchasing an Oreck product. It is quality--and they have the ability to back up their quality with great service from one of their 450 Clean Home Center stores. To all the Oreck bashers out there--get a life. You are so misinformed. As far as the Consumer Reports ratings, they are a non-objective rating company. They don't accept any sort of advertising money, but will give your product a great review if your company donates to their foundation. That sounds like extortion to me. Don't believe anything you read there--just that the #1 rated product is probably not the best one!!! Buy an Oreck and you will be happy forever!!!!

- I have a hoover wind tunnel vacuum. I like it very much except it seems to eat belts. I have had it about 3 months and have gone thru 3 belts. They are cheap so I don't really mind. But overall it is the best vacuum I have used.

Just anything to shield your dog's ears from the screaming machine. I have had to explain rips in the bag to the vac repairman myself...
