- i sympathise with you... i have also had more and more issues with appliance lifespans... i have not had a dyson vacuum cleaner, but have used another bagless model at my mom's... the dust-filled air is pulled through the filter, and the filter gets clogged almost immediately... i took the filter outside and used a brush to clean the pleats, but the filter was permeated with dust... instead of catching the dust in a cheap bag which can be thrown out, one has to replace an expensive filter... i shall always choose a bagged vacuum that also includes a hepa filter... consumer reports 2017 buying guide listed reliability of upright vacuum brands in this order: kirby, shark, dirt devil, kenmore, bissell, hoover, eureka, riccar, oreck, simplicity, dyson, miele, and electrolux... reliability is based on reported consumer experience... however, among bagless uprights the top test results went to shark, dyson, and hoover... among bagged uprights the top test results went to kenmore, miele, and hoover... it seems the vacuum that works the proper is not always the longest lasting... below is another buying guide... good luck...

- Oh gosh -- my sister has one, and I ask to borrow it whenever I can. I have a really good vacuum, too, but her Dyson has stuff I really like -- for example, the hose and attachments are right there and you don't have to stop vacuuming to hook anything up if you want to clean the baseboards or edges of furniture. Also, it really does move easily and can get under and around stuff than my vacuum can't. One idea, though, to save you some money -- my sister got hers almost brand new off of Craigslist for less than half of what the new one would be, and the warranty papers and all of that stuff was there just in case. She hasn't had any problems though.

- I love this vacuum. The Sebo is almost $600 but I only paid $300 for the Flexamatic (and it's even more heavy duty..go figure). I've owned her for almost 6 years, run her nearly every day and have never had a problem. I have had to replace the brush once, but it pops out very easily for cleaning and changing. All you have to do is push a button, twist the edge off and it slides right out. And every time I change the filters and bag, it's like having a brand new machine. My vacuum has done all the things that I saw claimed by Dyson. It never loses suction and it can maneuver anywhere.

- Q: Vacuum is the absence of matter. From my understanding, vacuums work by fans and air currents....I don't understand.
- No you don't understand. All fans work on the idea of a partial vacuum behind the blades. As the blades turn they push air out in front and suck in air in the back. By the way, my preferred suction cleaner is the Binford 3000 Super Sucker.
