Q: I want to make a quot;cozyquot; for a french press coffee makerI already have a pattern.well, idea for a pattern in my headBut I want to know what type of yarn would be the best to useI'd like it to insulate and be absorbent and washable and not stretch out too much over time.I'm very new to knitting, so this might be a stupid question :/
Wool not only insulates well and has memory (keeps its shape over time), it is also flame and heat resistantAcrylic is notYou should not use acrylic in any application where it is possible for it to ignite or become hot enough to meltWhen it does melt, it will stick to anything, including skin, and you can't get it off while it continues to burn into whatever it is stuck toWool, on the other hand, is much safer in high heat applicationsIt does not melt when hot and will extinguish itself if you manage to get it to burn just as soon as you remove the heat sourceA friend with a fiber studio had a fire a few years backALL of the acrylic yarn meltedALL of the wool yarn remained physically usable though it had smoke damage (a smoky odor)Wool is the number one choice for socks because it insulates, stretches and springs back wash after wash (ie has memory), and wicks sweat away from the skinThese are the same qualities you seek in your cozyIf you choose to get pure wool and felt it, it will no longer wick moistureInstead it will repel moistureSo your best choice is a mercerized (it will clearly say super wash on the label) woolFor what you describe, I imagine one hank would be enough.

Q: I used to have a box fan in the attic and faced the ventIt broke last late summer and I wonder if I need to get a new oneI don't know how good it is in reducing the temperature in the atticDoes someone here know if a fan is needed in the attic?
It's not a bad idea to have oneThe roof is one big solar collector - usually a conveniently dark color to make it even more effective - and the only thing standing between all that heat and your living space is whatever insulation you have in your attic, between your ceilings and that huge hot spaceA fan in the gable vents can help a lotIf you have soffit vents, then you could have a fan in EACH gable vent and remove even more heat that wayTaking the heat completely out of the attic before it can seep down through the insulation and heat up your living space will save you a lot of moneyYou said it was a box fanWell, any fan is a lot better than no fan, but you could do better with a more powerful fanShop around.
