Rugs can be created with a variety of materials from pure wool to woolen silk, from natural fiber to chemical fiber.
- Q: There's a nice hole in the carpet that's pretty deep. How do you fix it?
- We repair carpet all the time and it is part art and a lot of Patience. You need scrap carpet. A Straight Edge. A carpet Knife (Home Depot) Roberts carpet glue and seam tape. If the carpet is thick you have a better chance to not have the seams show. It is important the nap is running the same direction or you can see the patch. We use a pencil and paper. Place the paper on top of the carpet and pencil on top of the paper. Run your hand back and forth over the pencil and the paper will move. This is the direction the nap is running.. On you scrap you want to do the same thing and mark on the back the direction the nap is running. CUT Carefully and exactly. IMPORTANT. After you make your cuts dry fit and adjust till it looks great. Next Use the roberts glue to seal the edges on both the carpet and the scrap edges and let it dry. Otherwise it will fray. Place seam tape on the edges of the carpeting and place the scrap on it. Use a shoe brush to adjust and clean the nap. Trim any loose fibers. NOTE if you use new scrap carpet you will notice the patch.
- Q: What color of the carpet looks good with yellow sofa?
- Pale green is better, coordinating from the color.
- Q: How do you get a stain out of a rug that was put there from paper on fire. Only a part of the rug is burned.
- So is it a stain or a burn? If you had the same carpet sample, I would cut a square of the rug burn area and replace it with a patch. Then comb the fibers in to blend it in.
- Q: We just rented a house and the carpet has a very powerful urine smell. The landlord said he had the carpet cleaned and won't pay more. Is there a way to remove the smell permently? I don't want to mask the smell. i need a solution that really works and is cheap and effective. I see no visable stains just the super strong odor. I think it is berber carpet
- You are never going to get cat urine smell out of the carpet, your olfactory senses are just going to become accustomed to the smell and mask it themselves. Then when you have company or guests they will smell it. That carpet needs to be ripped up and the floor checked for saturation as well. The landlord IS responsible for that, and should have gotten a cleaning/security deposit from the last renter which He/She probably did, and wants to pocket the money, or tried a quick cheep carpet cleaning method which is a joke anyway, but that's a whole new subject/posting. I'm not sure what your relationship is with the landlord, but I told you what needs to be done, and maybe there is hardwood flooring under the carpet that can be restored or even just rip up the carpet and the HW floors might be in good enough shape to just clean up. ANYTHING will be better than that cat urine smell and nasty unsanitary environment for anyone to be around. I sure hope you dont have children especially ones that crawl still, THAT IS JUST NASTY. Either way, the landlord IS responsible and you have rights so If said landlord is refusing to step up and take their responsibility seriously, then take the slumlord to court and do a little research to find out the list of infractions they are committing , there's quite a few last time I inquired. Good luck, and remember, any cleaning will only mask cat urine, some more than the next, but will never completely remove the secretions.

- Depending on many factors it could be worth nothing or even thousands. The tough thing would be finding a buyer in your area. I assume you know how much you paid for it... put a free ad on craigslist to sell if for what you paid for it or best offer.
- Q: My carpet was just cleaned and is already dirty...it shows everything! I don't want to have to get down on my hands and knees to spot clean (the entire carpet constantly needs cleaning!) and I cant afford to pay a carpet cleaner every week. Is there like a carpet shampooing/cleaning machine you can buy for around 100 dollars or ANYTHING I can do? Thanks!
- You could rent a 'rug doctor' carpet cleaning machine. The walmarts in my neighborhood have them. They are like $20 to rent for 24hours. I've heard that they work very well.
- Q: Is there some kind of carpeting that won't collect dust deep within its root? We're going to have most of our carpeting changed to laminate because I have HORRIBLE dust allergies, but we want to keep the carpeting in the living room and dining room. Is there some kind of hypo-allergenic carpeting?
- Dust is in the air, when it settles it goes into the carpeting and a deep pile will be harder to clean so get a Berber or even a commercial carpet if you can stand it. None of it is hypoallergenic in regards to dust, but some of it is made with less formaldehyde or other chemicals.and may be marketed it as hypoallergenic in that regard. If that's not your problem, then just go with the low pile Berber and a really good vacuum. You might want to let the carpet air out a few days before installation. An area rug with a pile will hold dust too. Its the pile that is deep that doesn't allow the vacuum to get all the dust out. The material, wool, cotton, nylon doesn't matter, its the construction.
