THANKS: Yes, kids can and do fall out of toddler beds if they don't have siderails on them - same with single beds. With my little boy we went straight from a crib to twin bed with siderails on one side pushed up against the wall on the other. I just personally felt like buying a toddler bed was a waste as he was almost two when he stopped sleeping in his crib. I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer to this, it's really what you are comfortable with and what is safe for your child. If you already have a toddler bed, use it. If it's new and you can return it for a twin bed, I would because you're going to need to buy one eventually anyway.
