Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.
The earliest citation given in the Oxford English Dictionary for any word used as a name for this element is alumium, which British chemist and inventor Humphry Davy employed in 1808 for the metal he was trying to isolate electrolytically from the mineral alumina. The citation is from the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London: "Had I been so fortunate as to have obtained more certain evidences on this subject, and to have procured the metallic substances I was in search of, I should have proposed for them the names of silicium, alumium, zirconium, and glucium."
Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina."[69] But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound."
The -ium suffix conformed to the precedent set in other newly discovered elements of the time: potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and strontium (all of which Davy isolated himself). Nevertheless, -um spellings for elements were not unknown at the time, as for example platinum, known to Europeans since the 16th century, molybdenum, discovered in 1778, and tantalum, discovered in 1802. The -um suffix is consistent with the universal spelling alumina for the oxide (as opposed to aluminia), as lanthana is the oxide of lanthanum, and magnesia, ceria, and thoria are the oxides of magnesium, cerium, and thorium respectively.
The aluminum spelling is used in the Webster's Dictionary of 1828. In his advertising handbill for his new electrolytic method of producing the metal in 1892, Charles Martin Hall used the -um spelling, despite his constant use of the -ium spelling in all the patents[58] he filed between 1886 and 1903. It has consequently been suggested[by whom?] that the spelling reflects an easier-to-pronounce word with one fewer syllable, or that the spelling on the flyer was a mistake.[citation needed] Hall's domination of production of the metal ensured that aluminum became the standard English spelling in North America.
- Q: O.kfor my project i am making a giant tube of toothpaste but i dont know what to make it out ofDoes any one have any ideas of what type of material i can use
- Start with an empty cardboard tube, like one found in a roll of paper towels, or a toilet paper rollThese can be slightly flattened to assume the more traditional shape of a toothpaste tubeIf you want to go larger, you can use what's called a Quik-Tube, or the equivalent, which is used as a form for pouring concrete footings, etcThese you can find at any decent big hardware store, or home improvement store, like Lowe's or Home Depot, and come in an assortment of sizesLook in the building materials area, where they have cement, concrete, and their accessoriesTo make the ends look more like a tube of toothpaste, you could stuff them with aluminum foil, and then shape it and cover the entire tube with paper which is cut to the right contours at its endTo make the cap, a dowel rod, or an inverted Dixie cup, depending upon the size of the tube you use, might serve the purposeFinally, paint the entire thing with your own selection of creative colors, and come up with a name for your newly created brand of toothpaste.

- Q: Hi, thanks for looking :)I have a small red oak that is around 2m high (7ft?)I've noticed that since early summer some leaves on some twigs have started to slowly die, becoming brownI have also noticed that some leaves in the crown have some pale green or yellow spots, it look like it's bleached or somethingDo you think it needs fertilizer or what's the problem? if you think its fertilizer, how should I fertilize it? Thanks for your help!
- What I know: Saplings need pamperingWhat I don't know: How to pamper a red oakWhat I think: It might be lack of fertilizer(I'm inclined to think that's not it.) It might be not enough waterIt might be insects or a diseaseIt might be one or two freaky leaves that just didn't feel like staying green all summerYou might be having unusual weather as a factorWhat I recommend: 1Basic research on how to care for a new red oakIf that doesn't give you an answer, then2Lots and lots of research on the care of red oak and it's possible pest problemsWhat I'm pretty sure of: You probably don't have to get to step two yet;) All kidding aside (and I did include real ideas too), our city has been pushing free trees on people, simply because our mature trees are past their life expectancy, so we will need new trees to replace themI live in a part of the city with no groundWe have sidewalks for front yards and a slab of cement for backyards, but the city was willing to break open a slab of our front sidewalks and plant the tree for anyone who asked Now we have a whole bunch of saplings with what looks like plastic bibs at their baseThe bibs are to keep the trees watered (pour water down it and the plastic acts like mulch, keeping the water from evaporating quickly.) Consider the economy right now, and yet the city is offering trees and bibs for the treesThose bibs cost money, and yet, it's obvious saplings need to be pampered enough that the city is doing everything in its power to keep those trees alive(After all, if they die, the city has to remove them toolol) In this economy, if government is willing to protect baby trees that much, it tells me baby trees really need to be watered and cared for early in their lives-not so much once they've matured.

- The Lebanese specialty you remember might be Baba GhannoujIt's really easy once you have the ingredients(Tahini might take some searchingIt is a sesame paste that is highly flavoredThere's really no substitute, though it occurs to me that smooth peanut butter with a bit of sesame oil might be interesting.) It makes a scrummy dip for pita bread or pita chipsHere's a recipe from Alton Brown on the Food Network: 1 eggplant 2 cloves garlic 2 ounces fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons tahini 1/2 bunch parsley, leaves only Salt and pepper Pierce some holes in the skin of the eggplant (to avoid explosion) and grill over medium-high heat turning every 7 minutes, until the skin is blackened and the body is nice and softTotal time for grilling is about 30 minutesIf you do not have a grill you can roast your eggplant in a 375 degree F oven for about 30 minutesRemove eggplant from the grill and let coolOnce the eggplant is cool enough to handle, peel away the skin and discardPlace the eggplant flesh in a colander and drain for 10 minutesIn a food processor, combine garlic, lemon juice, tahini and parsley and pulse to combineAdd the eggplant fleshSeason with salt and pepper and pulse to combineAdjust the flavor with more Tahini or lemon juice if you preferIf it's bitter, some sugar or honey will helpResearch shows that the white variety of plant is sweeter in flavor.
- Q: Ok I have a 5X8 Cargo type trailerI haul around my 2 ice cream freezers to fairs and festivalsI need my generator on the trailer so I could power the freezers while on the road back and forth to the showsThe tongue wasnt big enough so we ended up cutting a hole in the bottom of the trailer and coming of the exhaust pipe with another pipe and ran it through that hole so it would vent outside. Here is the question. The pipe that runs through the floor is gonna get hot im sure, so I need a suggestion on what I can wrap that pipe with to absorb or hold in that heatI dont think it would get hot enough to catch the trailer floor on fire but I really dont wanna take any chances.Any suggestions on a good heat absorber?? The pipe is approx 12 in long with one 90 degree bendapprox 1in round and the hole in the floor is approx 2.5inThanks
- Find some 1/2 or so small aluminum tubing and cut enough pieces to go around the exhaust pipeHold them in place above and below the hole with stainless hose clamps.
