Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.
- Q: What are alternative materials that can be utilized for storing food?
-
In addition to plastic and glass, various materials can be used for food storage. Stainless steel containers are durable and do not affect the taste of food. Ceramic containers, especially those with airtight lids, can maintain freshness. Vacuum-sealed bags and jars can extend shelf life by removing air. Silicone bags are flexible and reusable. Mason jars are traditional and can be used for both storage and canning. Waxed paper or parchment paper can be used for wrapping food, and aluminum foil is a common choice for temporary food storage. These materials, when used properly, can help preserve food and maintain its quality.

- Q: I heard that Aloe vera is a good source of potassiumI also heard that it depletes your potassiumWhich would you find true? I've been eating a leaf a day striaght from the plant and I feel great- however, I want to have enough potassium in my body so I'd like to know the reason why it depletes potassium- if it doesAnd if it doesn't how much potassium am I getting from it?
- I'm diabeticDiabetes is not caused by food or overeatingIt also has nothing to do with your body's thermostat, you may just have a fast metabolism Sugar/high glucose levels do nothing to affect blood densityIt's more likely hormones Diabetes symptoms include excessive thirst, excessive urinating- the body is trying to get rid of excess glucoseAnd high blood sugar readings via a glucose meter reading I remember being 15 and having to deal with night sweatsIt goes away after a few weeks.
- Q: bad weather today need a homemade for dry rub for bbq pork slab of ribs that i want to make in oven
- I use lots Paprika, salt and paper to taste, marinated with 1/3 bottle of beerWrap everything in a sealed aluminum foil, put it in the oven at 325 degree for like 2 to 2.5 hoursThe meat will fall off the bonesYou can take a peek after 2 hours or soTake it out and brush some bbq source on itAlways a crowd favorite! Yum!!
- Q: inchessomeone please show me how to figure this out!!
- Please note that the first answer has the following formula: Volume mass densityThat is not correct! It was probably a typo It should be Volume mass / density or, as I learned it, DMV (as in department of motor vehicles!) Density mass / volume Things you'll need: Density of aluminum 2.7g/cm^3 Density Mass/Volume Volume of a Sphere 4/3 pi r^3 1 in 2.54 cm How to figure it out (please try to do it without looking at the answers first!): First, you need to find the volume of your sphere by using the dm/v formulaFill in what you know, which is the density and mass, then using algebra, solve for volumeSo you'll have: 2.7g/cm^3 82g/V Now solve for VThe grams cancel, leaving you with only cm^3Solving for V gives you V 30.37037 cm^3 Now you can use your volume in your volume of a sphere formulaThis gives you: 30.37037cm^3 4/3 pi r^3 Using algebra again, solve for your radius cubed: 30.37037 / (4/3 pi) r^3 r^3 7.25092 cm^3 Now, take the cubed root of each side (or raise to the 1/3 power) This should give you: r 1.93547cm Finally, convert your cm to inches 1.93 cm 1in/2.54cm 1.93cm/2.54cm So, your radius of the sphere would be: r 0.761997 in Now that you have your answer, make sure you are using the proper amount of significant digits, which in this case would be 2, so, your final answer should be: r 0.76 in You can work backwards to check your answer.
- Q: I recently started baking cookies but the parchment paper/cookie sheet is always burnt afterwards (and the bottom of the cookie too)Is it supposed to be like that? Should I use aluminum foil instead?
- Stupid question for u, but r u sure you're using parchment paper and not wax paper? Parchment paper is impregnated w/silicone and generally doesn't burn unless at VERY high temps (i made this mistake myself when i first took up cooking ten yrs ago, i didn't know any better)I wouldn't suggest using aluminum foil tho, u might want to invest in a silpat, or some similar reusable silicone baking mat, they're relatively cheap, and they work great for almost any baking use, not just cookies.
- Q: How does the aluminum foil fit the sealed plastic bottle mouth?
- The key is not to move it after sealing and place it in a relatively quiet place.
- Q: to make it healthierIf yes, what kind of paper? I remember vaguely reading about that.
- if the mom has chosen a place to put kittens she thought that was a safe place even if it isn't, you need to try and find a place that can hand rear them or try and do it yourselfif you cant do either of them go and get cat and don't let her in attic then she should just carry on her feeding thereif this isnt the case and she dont feed them anymore there is nothing you can do some cats do just abandon there kittens when they are moved or touched to early be careful he may try and kill oneif the mom dont carry on feeding you are going to have to try and feed them yourself or give them to cat protection or somthingsorry if this becomes the case and hope the mom comes aroundit might just take time, if they are really dehydrated you will have to get them fed quickly they are only little and weak at this agehope this helps :) my cat had kittens and killed one of hers we had to move her kittens and she moved them back again but finally settled and carried on feeding the other 3 fine.
- Q: In the equation:4Al+3O2 -gt;2al203When 0.590 aluminum is reacted in a closed container with 7.80 oxygen, how many grams of aluminum oxide can form?
- This is also kind of a chemistry question and therefore the math people will not be able to help you What you need to do is get out your periodic table of the elements and find out how many atoms of aluminum (AL) and Oxygen (O) are in one gramm by looking at the specific weight When you have found that out you need to multiply the amount of atoms per gramm with the given measures of aluminum and oxygen to find out how many atoms of each you have avaible Next you need to divid the amount of atoms of aluminum by 4 and the amount of atoms of oxygen by 6 (since you need 4 Al and 6 O atoms for the reaction)This numbers need to be rounded down and compared to each otherIf they are not the same then take the smaller number of both, which represents you with the amount of reaction that can take place Now you need to find out how much one 2Al2O3 molecule weighs (with the help of the periodic system) and multiply it with the number of reaction that you calculated Sorry, but that is best I can doMy chemistry is almost gone by now Cheers!
- Q: IM just asking because I find it hard to believe lightweight aluminum and PLASTIC can cost you 30kI've seen the new toyotas and there so weak feeling because there stirofoam on the inside and light aluminumAlso alot of cars are not using metal anymore but plastics like the wheel covers on jeep wranglersI just find it hard to believe there so expensiveThat's why I'm most likely going to get a old Toyota truck
- It is not the materials that cost so muchIt's the machines, tools, labor, and robots that make them and shape them into a carAs well as the permits, shipping, property taxes for factory, overhead costs, etcThat is the expensive part They are switching to aluminum and plastic to make their cars lighter so that they can get better fuel efficiencyThere is a demand for more features in a car such as bluetooth, GPS, 6 disk CD changer, power everything, heated seatsAll that adds lots of weightTo keep gas mileage good, they have to use lighter materials like more plastics and aluminum.
