Q: does modified bitumen work well? can i get in different colors?: Depends on the umbrellas, are they silvergold or just white reflective? How dense is the material you would shoot through? Are they soft boxes? I would use softboxes if you can get them. Highly reflective umbrellas with probably show up as hot spots in the image.

If it's a material that simply absorbs all or most of the light incident on it, it will just become dark without reflecting anything. If the material transmits some light and absorbs some, then the mirror will still become darker, but it will still reflect some (as though it had been tinted).
