- Foam core makes great reflectors. Insofar as gold foil is concerned, if it tears, it is easy to replace. And crumpling does a lot to soften the reflection. If you want a stronger material, try gold mylar. It won't tear so easily and it won't crinkle so much. I wouldn't try painting the foam core gold. Painting it might not prove the best reflective material for your needs. I have seldom found a good, really glossy (reflective) gold paint. But, you could try it and, if it doesn't work out for you, put foil on it afterwards. You could simply use silver colored broiler foil. It's strong, crinkles nicely, is easy to apply and reflects very well. It won't be a cold light source if your main light is warm (say, sunlight.) It's probably the least expensive option and is certainly worth a try. You might like it. I always used pure white flats to bounce light into my shots. These were large 8'X8' panels covered with white background paper. I then filtered the light with gels mounted behind the camera lens (View Camera) to get just the amount of warmth or color correction that I required. Considering that, you might be very happy using just the white side of the reflectors. Try that too. You can always add a correction factor either in camera or in post-processing if you need a bit more warmth in your shot. Hope these suggestions help. GlixPix

So, I'd imagine that once you purchase a fire extinguisher, you can do what ever you like to it, as long, as you say, it is for personal use. And, for your safety, it still works. Like, don't paint the pull ring so you cannot open it in the event of a fire. Paint it purple with pink polka dots, if you want. In the end, it is still a fire extinguisher, right?

- I have not heard of this development, but there have, for some time, been materials that absorb ultraviolet light, and emit visible light. We know them as 'high visibility' or reflective materials. And in that way they are actually able to emit more visible light then they receive. You have to think on the quantum level to understand it. When photons are absorbed by an atomic or molecular structure, the electrons go to higher energy states. The way they then emit a new photon depends on the 'downward' energy steps available to them. Commonly, they emit energy in the same sized photon they received it in. But clearly, it is possible to have materials emit lower freqeuncy visible light photons and then emitting the remaining energy in some lower frequency radiation - materials routinely do that in absorbing light and emitting heat . There is, I think, no 'law of nature' reason why the molecules could not be arranged in such a way that they would collect energy from multiple photons and emit a higher frequency light, but that seems less likely. But then, sometimes even less likely things turn out to be workable.

- I live in Florida and I'll quote you what I would charge based on what you're telling me here. I would charge you $50 to change out the kitchen faucet. I'm assuming there is a basement or crawl space under your house since it was built in '45, which makes access to the pipe very easy. I would charge you $150 to change the pipe outINCLUDING material. Pipe just doesn't cost that much. I think that's a reasonable price for you and a fair wage for me. I wouldn't pay to much attention to how long it takes the tradesman to get the job done. Keep in mind, you're paying them more for what they KNOW more than you're paying them for what they DO. I hope that helps.
- Q: I can not for the life in me figure out how to wash my clothes with the lid open. I tried sticking a fork in the hole where the lock is, the end of a tablespoon, I even tried shaping a piece of cardboard like the stick think on the lid and that wouldn't work.
