THe pack is indivisible and can only be used as a unit with those characteristics, ie capable of a constant 4.4 A output for 1 hour, half that ouput for double the time, 0.44 A for 10 hrs etc. These are nominal figures, so expect to get less, depending on the age of the pack in terms of charging cycles.

- both battery packs have a different chemical compound. But the same cut off charging voltage so you can use that one if you are sure that the physical characteristics of the battery packs are identical (+,-). Lithium batteries are dangerous so you want to be really sure about that!

- You can, yes. The only real danger would be connecting the battery backwards. There is also a better chance of a false peak (charger thinks the battery is charged, but it is not quite), but that poses no risks. Just be careful to hook it up correctly and you should be fine.

- That is not good at all. It seems like the battery is defective, or damaged. You should return it to the company for a replacement battery. Check you manual or the company website for service directions on returning the battery.

- No, the battery for the 1000 series cannot be used in a 2000 or 3000. On the very bottom of it (with the screen facing up and the shoulder buttons furthest away from you), you should see a barcode with the model number. If it says 1000 (or 1001 or something similar), you have a fat model. If it says 2000 or 3000, you have a Slim model. The 1000's battery doesn't fit in the 2000 and 3000's compartment. Sony does make replacement battery packs, however, as well as an Extended Life Battery Kit. If you use your PSP a lot, I really recommend getting the Extended Kit. It takes the normal battery life from 3-5 hours to 5-11. The only problem is it's bigger, and a bigger battery means a bigger cover. They only provide black and silver battery covers. It's not a huge problem, but it is there.
