- Buy your toddler a twin bed, for the first week or so, put the mattress only on the floor. That way if they make their way to the side of the bed they won't fall very far. As they get comfortable with their new boundaries then add the box springs and then the frame.We did this with our daughters when they graduated from the crib to their very own specially for them big girl or boy bed. To know when they are ready for a bed is when they start climbing out the their crib. Good luck!
