- Q:i just bought a new house in alberta. they just did the lawn, shrubs and planted a tree. now they are telling me i need to contact a person to come inspect it to make sure it was done properly before they give me my deposit for letting them garden my yard. i forget the proper name for the job tittle the surveyor has so i dont know who to call :'( please help.
- umm, the best i can come up with is either: Home inspector OR Professional Landscaper Hope that helps! lol However i don't quite understand why they would give you your deposit for letting someone landscape your yard, i have really never heard of that...
- Q:We're replacing our decks railing, so I thought it would be nice to use it as a fence around some raised vegetable garden beds. We're planning on selling the house in 5 years or so, would this be appealing to buyers? A nice vegetable garden? Thanks!
- A very nice landscape helps sell the house. It must look very pretty and look like it requires little or no care. A have never seen a vegetable garden that I thought would raise the price of a house. Been in real estate residential sales for 34 years.
- Q:Local nurseries are in business to sell stuff. Every garden question I have always come with some product they have to sell. I call it my $20 answer. The people at answers have been great. Thank you. Unfortunatly what does well for you in New York or Denver isn't much help to me where I live down here by the Mexican boarder in California. I am in need of answers that will help in my back yard. Answers without a price tag. Any suggestions? Thanks to all you wonderful gardeners where ever you live!
- Do okorder I am a long time gardener and I live a bit north of you, but on the edge of the desert/mountains. My biggest problem is lack of good soil and no matter how much I mulch, add compost, and more organic material, the lack of silt and clay in my soil means everything just leaches right through. I try to grow drought tolerant plants, mulch heavily, and use drip irrigation. I fertilize with slow release, organic type fertilizers. Some plants do well in my yard, and some struggle. You are welcome to email me.
- Q:I have a small home garden. I planted some purple passion spinach. Its growing beautifully, and I have three plants. The problem is there are these little green caterpillars that are eating it all! I noticed it on a fee leaves a while ago but didn't mind a leaf here or there. But they are eating it all now. Today, I harvested leaves from the plants and I had to throw hlalf of them away!!! I picked all of the big leaves and removed all of the caterpillars (its growing in a container) and killed them, some I threw away with the leaves. What do I do? I really don't want to put a pesticide on my food. Is there an organic or home remedy I can use?? Also, they are not eating any of my other plants.
- You could always introduce a predatory pest into your garden, such as lizards, frogs or wasps. That will control the caterpillar population for sure. Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) can be used for controlling caterpillars. It’s probably the number one way of getting rid of caterpillars. It’s a bacteria that infects and kills caterpillars by destroying the lining of the guts. It is effective only on caterpillars and will not harm anything else. Just spray on foliage and let them eat it. Be sure to buy BTK (the “K” stands for kurstaki).
- Q:He is currently incarcerated at SCI Camp Hill, PA, awaiting reclassification to a quot;Homequot; facility. Getting him a subscription should wait until he's transferred to whatever facility he is assigned to for the balance of his time to be served.
- The address for inmates is as follows: SCI-Camp Hill P.O. Box 200 Camp Hill, PA 17001-4531 The PA state guidelines for incoming prison mail can be found here (PDF file). You will want to put his name on it, of course, along with any identification number he’s been assigned. Inmates and their correspondents have remarked, however, that it takes a very long time (a number of weeks) for mail to get in and out of Camp Hill. Since you only want to send one issue for now, it may be easiest to buy the issue and mail it in your own envelope, or buy it as a back issue from Home Garden and have them mail it - but that last one may be preferable if you can arrange it, because stuff sent from publishers (and not people who will sneak other stuff in with it) is looked upon more favorably. You could also try to have an individual book store mail one issue, if they are amenable. Generally, prisons are pretty OK with inmates getting mail, as long as it is decent - no pictures of naked people, or anything like that, which I can’t imagine would be a problem with Home Garden. Also, things like Soldier of Fortune would be prohibited. It may pay to call the mail room there and ask what Camp Hill’s specific regulations are; for example, if they have to come from the publisher. The general prison phone number there is (717)737-4531. I know in Michigan (where I live), mail is generally seen as a good thing, because it connects a prisoner to the outside world in a way that could be therapeutic. I also had no problems mailing a friend of mine who was incarcerated in North Carolina. However, rules vary, and it’s better to check and know than mail and hope. Here are some other good guidelines about the Camp Hill mailroom. Good luck!
- Q:I made this back in the early 80s, and it was the best cheesecake I've ever had. It's made with 8 packages of cream cheese, a dozen eggs, and uses a pastry crust. It's baked in a large springform tube pan. I've been unable to find the recipe again. Does anyone have this recipe?I have found recipes that are 'close', but I really want to get that original...
- The last one with the cookie like crust is close, but I do not remember the whipping cream. Also the one I used back then had a strawberry glaze but the top had pineapple slices and strawberries with the glaze. Very good and made it for years. Lost the page out of my 1966 cookbook!!!
- Q:Appears to be being eaten by something. saw green caterpillar like insect on leaves of brussel sprout young plant. Other plants doing fairly well.See holes in a few other leaves, but somethings descimating my Brussell Sprout plants. Please help.
- I don't know where you are but here in New Zealand that green caterpillar is from the white butterfly. Under the leaf you will find an egg attached. Here, we dust the plant with a product called deris dust and that kills the caterpillar soon after hatching. The white butterfly lands on cabbages too but they don't like lettuce. If you boil a lettuce and strain off the juice, you can spray your brussell spouts with the juice and that should keep the butterfly away. Only draw back is that if you water the garden or it rains you have to spray again once the plant has dried.
- Q:im a teen and live with my mom grandmother 4 year old sister and my 8 and 12 year old brothers. we have a kitchen with green tile that we cant afford to replace. the boys share a room and my sister sleeps with my mom and grandma. i have my own room. we are trying to make the house look better and feel more like a home it was designed by make great grandmother and very old fashioned. we need help getting more color on the walls and in the house.. any tips and design ideas would be alot of help.. dont forget the green tile on the kitchen counters
- Paint. Paint is the cheapest way -- by far -- to change the appearance of something. There is a paint for every job, even appliances, floors and tiles! Do some research, shop and ask questions. Learn all you can and then decide on the colors you want. Don't wimp out on all the prep work -- clean everything, sand what needs sanding, use primer and THEN paint. If there is a lot of woodwork, sand it all down, clean it and then either reseal it or re-stain it and then use a sealer. You'll be amazed at how much fresher and cleaner everything will look. The other thing to think about is layout. Changing the layout of furniture to provide a better flow will make a HUGE difference. Get rid of some furniture if things are cluttered. Good luck!
- Q:My husband and I just bought our first home. We have been living in apartments for years and know nothing about gardening, etc.We pulled up a bunch of dead flowers, bushes, etc. around the house and now want to replant some. We know that we should plant perrenials, as I don't want to do this every year. I would like something that brings a little color to the garden. We have three different areas to plant them in. Two of the areas are not shaded, one is partially shaded.Any suggestions?
- A good thing to do is to visit a local garden center/nursery and discuss your situation with them. They will know what plants to suggest that will grow well in your area. They can show you what works well for sun, shade, etc. You'll also be able to see what they look like so you can narrow down your choices even further. I am also in Southern NJ and a professional landscaper for about 20 years. I could list hundreds of plants that will work, but you should really see them first to get an idea for your garden design. If you care to, you could list your town or at least county, and I will be glad to point you towards some reputable nurseries I have done business with. You can email me directly too, if you want more help. I am in Cumberland county.
- Q:i saw these two home designing programs at the same price and i was wondering which one is better......1. Punch! Professional Home Design Platinum2. Better homes and gardens design software....and another question, what programs do pro architechs use when creating blue prints and designin homes?
