If your wheel have some physical defects in them, like fat spots or chips, or coning, then it will slow you down and make the ride uncomfortable. You just may have the wrong wheels for your skating type. Bigger wheels go faster and can go over obstacles better, but are harder to do flip tricks. Harder wheels go faster, buy you have less control. Softer wheels grip on turns or in bowls and provide a more comfortable ride, but are slower.

People use those with wide tires for more clearance. Wheel adapters on the otherhand, are used to change the bolt pattern on the hub. Say you have a 8 bolt hub and you want to put 6 bolt wheel on it. Or a hub set up for 15 wheels and you want to put 21 wheels on instead. So, to answer your question the way it's stated, if the wheels you will be installing have a different bolt pattern, then yes you will need use adapters with the spacers.
