Portland cement can be added to increase workability and whiteness but should comprise no more than 20% of the mix. Too much cement makes the mix too hard and can damage historic (soft) brick as the brick expands and contracts due to seasonal changes in moisture. A question similar to yours was asked on this site August 12, 2007. The reply had a bit different recipe but it is certainly worth reviewing as historic masons (The Dead Men) had their own recipes.
